advice on new headunit

Post by brumbyrunner » Sun May 03, 2009 6:22 pm

I realise this is more of a car audio forum type question but I have spent hours researching different forums and brands and havn't comeup with anything more conclusive than "there are a lot of units that will do the job".
Considering the depth of expertise amongst Suby owners, I'm asking the question: What headunit would you buy to fullfill the following needs?

* double din
* must play CD & DVD
* GPS street navigation
* dual zone for GPS & DVD
* outputs for rear screens
* input and control over portable external hard drive device

Other things that would be good but not vital:
* touch screen
* reversing camera input

Things I don't need:
* off-road navigation like the VMS unit
* motorised or removeable or rotating screen

I had a Kenwood unit picked out for the orange car before it sold. I just looked at their website and it is no longer there. This one should do what you want but you need to use the second link for the navigation side of things.

I would buy an eeepc 701 (or similar), buy the touchscreen kit, and a 32gb usb stick, and one of those usb fm radio things, gps, etc.

Since you want cd/dvd then I'd buy a usb cd/dvd thingo, too.
The only trouble is you need to make the dash insert around the screen.

Though with the amount of stuff you want there you might want to get a better pc instead of the little eee thing. Or start from scratch with desktop pc parts.
Living in Canada now. Looking at all these SVXs for sale...

Build a carpc and a buy a 7 or 8 inch touch screen.

you can build a carpc for less than one of those TFT screen head units and it downloads porn. :)

only hard part is mounting the screen but if its done right there's nothing it wont do and it looks well James Bond.

Mini ITX motherboards are tiny, you can build one so small it fits in the glovebox.

What about chatting to Dane about what he has in his car.

Geez fellas you're about 7 weeks after my post. :lol:

I ended up installing a headunit from the link in my post. It's bit overkill in my wife's car so I might put it in my work ute where I can use the GPS mapping. If I do that I'll put a touch screen Alpine in her car. I only found out afterwards that Alpine have an optional street navigator package.

The whole carputer thing is a bit too high tech for me. Plus, people I spoke with who have built themselves one are always fidling with them and changing things like a regular computer. Would be a good project for the IT minded trying to save a few bucks but I want to just bolt it in and use it.
