Subaru MY06 Outback - Aux Input Question

Post by OzWolf » Mon Feb 15, 2010 12:10 pm

Hey guys,

So, I'm looking to get an auxillary input cable installed on my factory head-unit, but before I start springing for parts (or just giving up and getting a Parrot MKI9200 unit), I've been trying to find out if my head unit is entirely capable of it.

Frustratingly, Subaru Australia AND my local parts center seem incapable of actually telling me what plugs are available on the back of the head unit, so I come here in the hope that SOMEONE might know the answer.

I have a MY06 2.5i Outback (base model, so no sat nav, etc.). It has a 6-disc stacker factory unit. On the front source selector, there is an AUX option (which leads me to believe it is capable of achieving what I want).

The question is: can this head unit in this model have the Outback auxillary audio cable part installed?

Cheers,

OzWolf

aux was a factory option i believe so its more than possible. Hopefully its just like a rca to headphone jack, or soemhting like that. Pull her apart and have a look :)

"Pull her apart" is a term that I ignore now after a bad track record of dealing with car trim.

Can never remember the model number of the stereo...will post it when I can get to the car.

All that being said, I am now seriously considering the iO Play and just running it as a Bluetooth all-in-one solution.

GX-204KH is the model number of the stereo.

6-CD MP3/WMA stacker and has AUX as a selector option.

I put one in my new MY07 Outback over the weekend. Part number H6210AG000, about $120 from subaru parts. Yes its a rip off but it is plug and play and easy. Its a 5 wire connection to the 3.5mm socket and you unplug a cable from the back of the head unit and plug this in and it has a socket to plug the original cable into. You can only select aux when something is plugged into the socket which is presumably what the extra 2 wires are for, some switch so it knows when something is plugged in. If ya were keen you could prob make something up with $15-$20 worth of bits from jaycar/altronics etc.

Give em a ring and see if it will plug into a MY06 head unit aswell? Mines got the 6 stacker mp3/wma stereo as well

Thanks for the info mate...definitely has got me interested now. Would be a cheaper option than $400 to get a Parrot MKI9200 kit installed...$120 for the part + $40 for installation.

The funny thing is that Subaru Australia AND Performance Autos (the Subaru reps in Hobart) have no idea if it's possible, despite telling them the stereo model # and the Outback model exactly.

Does the aux cable have the length to reach the center console?

And looking at the picture of the head unit in the MY07 accessories catalog (http://www.subaru.com.au/files/pdf/MY07 ... sories.pdf), it's the exact same head unit.

I know I've ragged Subaru and PA out a little bit here, but this is the first time they've been lacking, so I'll put in the good word. The front diff went in the Outback...got a brand new Forrester for two weeks as a loaner while the car was repaired under warranty. The hand grip on the inner door snapped off and Subaru is going to replace the entire door trim for free. And PA's service is fantastic as well, including driving the car to my workplace when the last service was done because it was raining (the service center is a 25 minute walk from work).

Yep, 3.5mm jack goes under the power socket in the console box.

Edit: Ahhhh just checked my head unit, model GX-204KE and the aux in instructions say "Applicable period 07MY-" Hope i havent got your hopes up on a false promise :(

You're a champ mate. Part ordered, installer is going to put it in for free with the speaker installation I've got them doing next week.

Now to find a nice way to mount the iPhone using the 12v socket + aux port in the glove box.
