Early MY04 Outback headunit question

Hi folks.
I'm looking for a solution for my new outback. The stock stereo sounds fine for my needs but it is really annoying not having an aux input.
I have scoured the net looking for an answer, but my headunit seems a little unique. It is probably the last car ever to have a standard in-dash tape player and all the 'how-to" pages on wiring in an analogue audio source such as sound from an ipod don't even mention the tape unit.
I'm sure I could piggy back the wiring to the tape unit but I'm not sure where to start with this big imposing dash stereo/HVAC combo unit.
Any help out there? I seem to remember a member called Chris that was extremely helpful and a font of knowledge for audio in the past.
