if u mean behind the plastic grill then id say about 4 inch which is i think wat the factory ones are.
but if u cut it out u can fit 6" ones like i did.
also did u know there is a speaker under the dash where those holes are? i found it interesting

6.5" and you can still keep the OEM covers. you will need a bit of MDF to space it out and a bit of body filler to seal the gaps.

And another tip is rewire them, factory Subi wiring has a common negitive for each left front and rear; and same again for right side. I spliced into cables from the door wiring into the plugs found under the carpet around the door pillars back to the unit. Mine were 4", and looks possible to go bigger as suggested.

That centre speaker was only in the DL's i think, because of the mono radio.
Gl's had a stereo radio/tape and didnt have the centre speaker

I put 2 8" subs in the cargo box under the carpet at the back. it works quite well, just need to find a way to secure the lid as it vibrates too much.

did u have to mount the box or was the box realy slim

the box is really thin, just enough to house the 2 subs in depth and width. i think its just out of its tuning frequency cos of the box being a bit on the small side, but still sounds alright.

pioneer or earthquake make shallow subs. from there remake the door into a bit of solid MDF and seal the area below and you are done.

I think Bluesteel's did a great job of his, I wish I had tried out the fiberglass for mine.
here's a pic of what he posted in my thread
This is what I did, and it took a while.

box w/out front
The best bit is I can still fit a mini bike in there and use most of the space with the seats down.

In a L series the spare tyre is under the Bonnet, So there is plenty of room in the bit in the boot.
