Sub in engine bay.... ?

Post by tommo » Fri Jun 01, 2007 8:05 pm

So I've been thinking...
After lifting the brumby and putting bigger wheels on, as most people with MY's will know (not sure if L's are the same), there's a big bloody space under the bonnet where the spare used to go.

I've heard of people putting toolboxes in there, and I've seen 92 brumby's air compressor set-up. (both good ideas in their own right)
But I've also been wanting to put a subwoofa in somewhere, and thought why not squeeze one in there?

So my questions are:
Would the engine bay get too hot and start screwing up a speaker like that?
Would the firewall and stuff cut out too much of the sound? (or does bass penetrate stuff like that easily enough)

They're the only potential problems I can see. I can fairly easily make a box the right volume to fit in there, with a whole cabinetmaking workshop at my disposal. :)

Let me know what you think, and what else people have put in the big fat crater under their bonnets.

Cheers,
Tommo.

LOL

10 points for crazy idea man ;)

a sub isnt going to last long in a hot, wet, dirty, greasy, engine bay. If your a cabinet maker, your best bet is to get a sub that doesnt require alot of volume, and knock something up that fits behind your seat

few different types.

usually it refers to a driver that is set up firing inwards to a sealed cavity/box. It also has an enclosure to hold the driver as always. They are ported (big hole, toilet paper role style) sticking out of it to accommodate for pressure releases on the negative throw side (hard to describe). Anyway, the bass is usually LOUD, but is often boomy, has a high cut-off and power handling goes upwards

do yourself a favour and get a slimline sub...it will blow you away in the small cabin space of a brumby. Bazooka tubes work very very very well also..

I like the idea of the bazooka tube. haven't actually heard one in action, but i was pretty sure you could get something like that. Haven't heard of a slimline sub though?
usually the size of the sub is affected by the volume the box needs to be isn't it?
Just wondering, do all subs need another amp put in to power them or is that just the bigger ones?

and also a 15inch JB's in the middle of the seats in a triton..but it took up alot of space and wasn't very practicable

in your case i'd just run a 4channel amp. You wouldnt have any rear speakers to worry about in a ute? Front two channels of amp to your front speakers, and bridge the rear two to the sub.

This is a pioneer slimline sub, 8.7cm deep!
Image

something like that in a nice small custom box for your ute, some decent fronts and a decent amp will blow ya away me thinks! :D

yeah i agree, that looks like a pretty good idea.
i was sorta thinking one of those tube subs might squeeze in up underneath the glovebox though? maybe if you took that shelf under the glovebox out, but I haven't taken any measurements or anything.
Might stick out too far and look weird.
I don't know about you guys but the seat in my brumby's RIGHT back on the back of the cab, and i've got all sorts of tools and **** stashed in what little room's left behind there.

I had a 10 inch sub In both of my brumbys. One has impreza seats. Behind the passeger seat i was able to squeeze a 10 inch sub in a small sealed enclosure. Works quiet well as cabin space is small. You need to put a grill on it as seat is right up against the grill in mine. Passenger Gets a free massage!
So many optioins not enough time or money:confused:

thats 1 crazy idea but i don't think it would work. with the limited space u have in the cab ur best option would to buy a small sub to put behind the seat, even a good set of 6" by 9" with more wattage would give u the bass u need. Im only running 6"9" with a 350 watt amp and i recieve more than enough bass and thats in a wagon.
