what version? Am/FM/tape? AM/FM only?

they run a common earth on those anyway so you will have to rewire them.

remove the kick panels and grab the 2 pin plug in each - remove the B pillar lower trims and do the same. route all of them to the radio area.

antenna may be the other issue. length may be a bit short.

DL's have a common earth, GL's didnt. Well my 89 GL Touring wagon doesnt

Is your wagon a Gl or a DL?

Does it have factory speakers in the rear doors?

Hmm my scanner sucks so I'll fill in some your list for you but it says 'typical audio system for 1980- 1994' so yeah I dunno it's all it has. Very vague even though it cost me 40 bucks. Make sure you get your multimeter out and test those first don't take my word but maybe that will help.

black - earth*
red -Illumination switch
yellow - speaker?
blue - speaker?
blue/white - speaker?
white - always hot?
grey/red -
yellow/black - hot on key?
blue/red -
grey/black -
green/red -

I just pulled out my cd player and this is what i got.

The constant positive i wired from the battery (via a fuse of course) in heavy gauge wire to reduce voltage drop
Black = Negative
Blue/Yellow = Accessories

Yellow = Left Front Speaker
Yellow/White = Left Rear Speaker
Blue/Red = Left Speaker common

White = Right front speaker
White/Blue = Right rear speaker
Blue/Black = Right speaker common

I havent yet hooked up the rear speakers but it looks like they have a common ground per side.

Yeah on my diagram each sides speakers ground to the same point

PS...re-wire the speakers, the stock speaker cable is nothing short of appalling.

I dunno if it is like this in any other cars but i found out that the constant power for my stereo ran from the clock in the dash.

I figured this out when i put my new stereo in and the clock stopped working and smoke started coming out of the dash. It melted all the wires and caused a lot of head scratching..

But it should be that:
Black= earth
yellow= 12 v constant power
red= ignition (so stereo turns off when the key does)
and the rest etc blue, green, brown, white, Grey i think should be your speakers.

There appears to be a few variations

Your best bet would be to grab a multimeter, pull off your speakers and bell each one out individually

I'm a stickler for organisation (messy is fine so long as its organised and safe:)). I picked up the female wiring plug from the wrecker, took a while to find a stock stezza, choped the wires and plug off it. Then hard wired my Pioneer plug to it to make a solid "pioneer" specific loom, so i could easily take my deck form one car to another. However my 88 and 86 have different wires going to the back of the male plug (that is the one that stays w the car). So effort wasted.

I concur, looks like there are variations...

checked ther wireing. looks like suparoo's got it right. the colours i gave wer from the unit not the car. anyway... beeen ugging me that i couldn't find a constant 12v, but then i thought, those old unit didn't have a constant feed because they don't have memory. am i right? i did find that the clock's constant feed is the blue one but i'm thinking about using the fuse box.

strange thing is mine (88 japspec) has a +12 feed in it. clock is easier to get at for +12 and its fused.

probably because it is a jap spec. anyhow i did all the wireing and my new pioneer head is all powered up from constant 12v, acc, and illumination. now i just got to go through my speakers. i decided to keep the original pluged aswell. that's for protection. the new head is hiddend under the ashtray.
