A conundrum, just got a 92L wagon

when turning corners, going over some bumps etc stereo (original) was cutting out then came back on when it felt like it. got stereo out and in process of replacing (thats another story) and read a bit bout how crap OEM wiring is.

Question1 is could it be dodgy wiring (in which case what do i replace??? - please don't say everything) or just head unit. Checked connections and visible wires and all seem solid - has anyone had this prob and fixed it.

Question 2 - it looks like there's rear speaker wires connected up but no rear speakers, where would the wires come out/be hiding - wagon lid, left and right of wagon area, inside radiator... (where do i search???)

check all you speaker wires if one side cuts out at a time, else you will have to take the head unit out and check all those wires.
rear speaker wiring may run down under the carpet on the door sills but could be anywhere as L series dont come with rear speakers from factory

If it's turning off over bumps Id check the harness at the back of the headunit, then the earth, power and accessory wires.

As for the rear wires mine run down into the tailgate from the roof, it was already like that when I bought it.

rear wiring is in the bottom of the B pillars - speakers are 6" and go in the rear doors.

radio (OE one) is a loose connector on the radio itself. I grabbed a original electronic radio from the wreckers and it had this problem.

if you are replacing the radio - rewire the speakers. they are common -ve and not really worth the effort.
questions - ask. I do this for a living.

spend 0 time on this - for the price of decent CD tuners / speaker packages makes investing too much time on an OME radio is a waste!

Got new CD player in finally after a little remaking of the brackets and swearing (could barely fit a midget in the stereo area), and the power cutting out seems to have gone.

Going to look for those pesky rear speaker wires tmrw.

Q3 - Chris_Rogers what do you mean by common -ive? do the front/rear or left/right have the same (common) -ive? and how does this impact speaker performance? (and can i rewire relatively easily?)

they do share a common -ve. IE one -ve wire feeds both speakers.

in short they did this to save money back in the day. the radio that was used was low power and didn't rely on a high voltage power supply to run it internally. they were usually referenced to ground. the newer radios are not. using the original wiring on those will kill it at worst - at best you will have all lights and no sound. rewire all the speakers and you are done. fronts are a 2 pin plug inthe kickpanels.
