Doug's EA81 Rebuild stuff.
Ok, Im stunned.
Ordered some valve stem seals today at around 11am because the first guys I ordered from told me they couldn't get them in. Get home thisarvo and sitting on my table are the valve seals. That's 6 hours from Victoria to WA. Talk about top notch customer service.

Off topic Doug- just for a post.
Having travelled about 100,000kms a year for 12 years and now semi retired travel 50,000kms a year throughout Northern Vic and southern NSW, I can honestly tell you that if you speed now you wont get away with it.
My last episode was 13 months ago. I was on 11 demerit points. one more and I can lose my license. Driving from Rutherglen on the Murray I reached the main road and got up to an indicated 105kph in my jolly jumbuck ute. I dont have cruise. I forgot that the speedo reads low by 5 kph. Cop coming the other way caught me. He approached and gave me a official warning. Now I've been around the traps in law for some time. When you receive a warning "anything you do say may and will be used against you" is actually advice to you- take my advice and 'be quiet'. By speaking you will not get off and improve your chances of it.
So the cop booked me. He listened to my story of the speedo. When he returend to his car I fumed and walked up to his door and gave him a spray. His comment "did you know you are driving a defective vehicle"? (Jumbuck was 13 months old) Why? I aksed... "Because no vehicle can be sold in Australia with the speedo reading low since 2006".
Of course I shut up and drove off. No wonder some cops are hated. He was correct and he sort of told me if I dance too much he'll take my car off the road. I rang his boss. He confirmed all. He also told me that the state Govt are so determined to get the road toll down that they have flying squads now in this case the cop was stationed in Epping Melbourne and drove to the Murray area to book everyone no exceptions if they are over the limit.
The speedo issue is another issue with Proton but I was aware of it. So my advice is- if you are over the limit- be quiet dont waste your energy explaining and swallow the fine. It isnt worth explaining to these hard liners any seemingly genuine reason you have. Pity they dont look at erratic drivers that are more of a threat IMO. By the way- I get my 12 points back in 3 weeks time. yeh!!!

yeah coppers, cant live with them, cant live without them.
As far as Im conserned, if a copper comes up to my car and fines me for speeding, fair enough, but if he comes over and ask's me how fast I was going, my answer is always going to be "the speed limit". Same if I get pulled over for a breatho and I know Im close to the limit. "no, I wont blow into your breath tester. I want a blood test." By the time you get to the hospital, and they get there shit together, most likely completely sober

Hey all,
Spent Friday night putting on the heads, all torqued up and rocker towers bolted on.

Busy day today. First, this happened,

31 years of grime, dirt and and oil all brewing in the engine bay. That's gonna get a good scrub and the wiring, a tidy up.
Now some engine pics for the keen,

Got some bungs to go into the manifold. Some distinct difference between the 1982 heads and the ones off the newer motor. New hoses all around. Should come out nice.
I contemplated painting the heads black with the block but Im kind of attached to the silver/black/red look. I with the manifold just primed and clear coated I think it looks nice.
Anyway, the bad news is the new clutch that's been bouncing around my house for the last 6+ months is about an inch smaller in diameter. The old clutch is completely knacked. It was slipping when I was trying to undo the crank pulley
. Il order a new one and hopefully get it during the week. Any suggestions on brand? part number?
Anyway soon fella's, soon.

Doug

looks great. personal preference but I would have stuck with the silver on the oil filler and water pump pulley and black on the sump BUT....its ok. The head s I'd keep silver. At first didnt like the black block but its grown on me Doug.

Cheers fella's,
I thought about throwing in some yellow but didn't have the paint so I didn't. I didn't go crazy on the paint, just a few coats of enamel spray paint. Not sure on how It will stand up to time but given that I had the old motor out in less then 2 hours(including waiting for the rain to piss off
), It probably isn't that much of a deal to whip it back out for a re-coat every now and then
. I still haven't painted the larger cast iron brackets. What color if any do you guys think?
Tomorrow Il hop into that engine bay and get scrubbing. Friggn spewing about the clutch, maybe Paul has one tucked away in his unit that I can "borrow"
. Il give him a ring tomorrow. I could just use the old pressure plate and put in the new clutch plate. It only gives me around 80% contact though.....might see if I can pull off some of the pad meat and stick it on the old plate.....I shall look into it.
Anyone have a need for one of these little clutches? Brand new
.

when ypu get ya new clutch be prepared for the right questions from a good parts guy .
Ya running the old 4 speed 4WD box ?
All EA81 flys ran 23mm step
All EA81s ran 6201 pilot bearing
All EA81 4WD boxs had 21 spline input shaft
Some ran the 326 release bearing, some ran the 336
TBR (thrust bearing release TBR 326 TBR 336)
Your tiny clutch is probably R7926 200mm CD 8095 clutch disc with the 800 - 582 presure plate
Sounds like you need the CD 8942 clutch disc, 900-537 pressure plate,
could be a toss up on the tbr 326 or tbr 336 - the differences between those tbr numbers may be FWD or 4WD clutches

Not to worry Steptoe, I got a new one

Took it for a drive after work today. Not far, maybe 10km's. Temp stayed normal and oil pressure was fine the whole time. Runs nice and smooth. Just gave it some mild accellerations and coasting back to rolling stop. Got a slightly noisy tappet but other than that it sounds great. Il pop the rocker covers off and readjust them all, and retorque the head's. Then Il take it for a blat out of town I think. Might try for ~500km's.
And then, its 4 wheeling time

Update for anyone interested. She now has just over 600km's on the clock. Apart from replacing the PCV valve its been running like a champ. Took it out onto the beach last weekend and it went fine. Improvements over the older motor? More top end, thats about it. Fuel consumption is around the same amount. I had to go down a few sizes on the main jet to get the AFR back to something normal. Still rich but Im not too fussed about it at the moment.
Best comparison I have is to my vortex's MPFI ea82. Seat of the pants feel is that they both pull about the same off the line. Vortex's 5 spd becomes a bit of an advantage for accelleration. Little ea81 rounds off its power curve earlier then the MPFI. Other than that they feel very similar from around 2000 to 4500rpm
. I think with a slightly larger exhaust on the ea81 and the twin 34 ICT's over each head the Vortex may be in trouble

Yeah, I replaced the hoses going to it on the new motor. Then I was suffering low idle vacuum. New PCV fixed it up nicely.
I pulled the EFI stuff off. It was too much of a lashup. I plan on reinstalling it in the near future. I now have a nice little litre surge tank the will fit nicely under the car with the bosch 044 pump. Save running a return line all the way down the car if I can just have all the fuel stuff in the back of the car, maybe inside the compartment with the rear window washer tub. I might also splash out on something like this,
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Harley-Zippe ... 232e47be53
Which would make the install really neat
.
I also really want to give these 34ICT's a go. I think Il finish off my fiberglass manifolds and try the twins before persuing the EFI route. Carbies appeal to me more
.
Yeah, may have a dig at some wreckers, see if I can find any subie zorsts. The 2 inch system on the vortex suits my driving style perfectly so maybe something along the same lines will be good for the old MY. Failing that I might just have a go at making one myself. Worst case senareo I have to put the old one back on

bargain alraight Doug. I have a spare EA81 block you can have. It's totally useless....a 90 kilo piece of useless heavy steel lump of metal....should make a fine replacement for the Harley engine your purchase came off.
