anyone able to translate to English from say, the original Italian text ?
Increase reliability ?

Nice find Jules. I reckon the SUB4 heads were a little closer to home when they were in production.

How do you deal with twin spark plgs per pot with our dizzies, rather ...how do they ?

Hmm, when I click the link its in english??

Ive seen those heads before. Donno how well they would work in a car though. They look about twice as big as normal ea81 intake ports. They would probably scream like crazy but have little torque. If I wanted that Id use an ea82 :D. Would probably need a supercharger to get the full benifit of that sort of head in a car. By then though, If your chasing power there are better alternatives.

I think for what it is, give the ea81 a port matched intake manifold, clean up the casting impurities in the ports, good valve job, good flowing ehaust system, upped CR and EFI with electronic mapped ignition curve ~10-15% would be in the scope. More If your revved it harder but I believe the EA81 is all about torque. If you could get the intake to flow well, then there would be dramatic improvements from forced induction. As the heads are at the moment......Well Its like bad food. Your can cover it in sauce, but at the end of the day, your still eating bad food covered in sauce .

Doug

have a look at the link and it looks to be an en translation of the Italian original with a 'net translation flavour to it - maning a human likely to do a better job of it.
You could do all that and have it use more fuel too - then get upset with that aspect - tweety is one example.

Spoke to a fella who claimed he near matched a Falcon turbo with his NA Falcon, copped an increment with fuel use to its power increase and ended up trading down to a 4 cyl girls car - with no mods.

Contacted SUB4 years ago to get an idea of cost of their heads and roller rockers - was beyond my budget by far. They ran their parts in their dark blue Brumby.

My link has been translated by google translate if you want Italian then click on the little flag symbol.

There are subtle grammar and wording differences between the two pages but they still say the same thing.

Well what did he really expect? more power but no more fuel consumption. Power comes from burning fuel, getting more power comes from getting more fuel into the cylinder. Turbo Cars have manageable fuel consumption because they only use more fuel under boost, when its needed. A N/A car that can match a Turbo car for WOT HP, during coasting and crusing its still running a very high Volumetric efficency, where a turbo isnt. Thats why turbos are the bom :D

Got some work done today, quick clip for you that are interest,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPoPslbx ... tube_gdata

Mechine is a shaper, very old. Chugs along and gives arguably the best finish you can get. Better then a grindstone, better then a mill cutter. silky smooth.

Ended up taking around 40thou off the heads, should ramp up the CR a bit for a little bit better torque.

Whole process took around 5 1/2 hours to do both heads.

Doug

Subydoug wrote:Oh really??? They didnt use the better heads??? Thats crazy! What were they thinking?? That'd need a good custom port job to be any good I think.
Being EFI Turbo they didn't really require the opposite valve (twin port) arrangement like the twin carby model. They only ran 5-6 psi, so it didn't require full flow setup but if you're staying NA then I'd go the matched porting and exhaust polishing.
Subydoug wrote:Tell you what, Il finish this motor off, Then When I pull the old motor, I can stick those on it with a nice sized turbo, and Paul can stick it in his Hatch :D. (hint Hint Paul :D ).
LOL.. what hatch?? I'm thinking you make the Touring Wagon a turbo and supercharge the XT

I could certainly feel the 4lbs boost from the SC. Nice torque upgrade. I would imagine It had a different cam as well? The MPFI itself would have given great throttle responce.

Il give you a hint, Its Blue and its awesome . This engine may or may not end up with a turbo force feeding it..Havent decided yet.

As for the XT, anyone care to swap their ej22 for a lovely piece of subaru ea82 history :D LOL, nah the XT is staying stock. Fast enough for me, though it may inherant a 4wd system and a turbo, another thing I havent decided about yet either.

I think for what they are, and for the specific jobs they are made to do, they do a flawless job. I wouldnt think twice about doing cylinder heads in it. The finish is that good I wont need to touch it before assembly.

Yeah you do have to be exceptionally carefull around the old shaper. The urge to feel the cut finish can become overwhelming and before you know it, Chomp. Bye bye finger

Hey Fella's

Cleaned down a bench. Pulled the rest of the gudgeon pins, popped the bolts out and yanked the crank case apart :D.

Image

Just finished degreasing the case halves. Will sandblast them tomorrow. Measured the bores, about half a thou out of round and about 1 thou within service limit . No rebore needed. Just a light hone and some new pistons and it will be on its way for another 200k. Speaking of which, Paul any ideas on the km's of this engine? Bearings all look great (doesnt mean much, I dont have the tools to measure) but are getting replaced.

So now some tidy up, sandblast and paint job, wait for some bearings to rock up in the post, slap the halves back together, drop in some funky piston thingys, Bolt on some miscellaneous parts that will remain undisclosed for now and unleash terror on the road .

The waiting begins.......

Doug

Oh wow a shaper! Only seen those in books and tales from the old tool makers at work. A pretty decent size, you do a lot of work on it? 5 hours....now I see why they moved to bridgeport style milling machines :)

Its actually my dads. It has an 18" stroke. Mainly used now for the odd key slot in big gears. Its had a pretty hard life. Also has a mill and lathe. Chose to use the shaper because of the finish and ease of tooling and setup. If I had to do another 2 heads now it would probably only take me 3 hours. Took it pretty easy on the first head. Great tool to just set up and carry on doing something else, Just lean a crowbar up against the travel so it knocks it over when its done .

Arh ok no worries.

Latest update on the motor. All dissasembled, cleaned and blasted.

Image

Blasted the rocker covers and sump cover too for a fresh lick of paint. Sump has a lot of ground in grime so Il attack it with sand paper beforehand. What color should I go?

I didnt sand blast any mating surfaces. I also didnt sand blast inside the motor. To remove the tarnish brown I use some Degreaser. Degreaser was alkaline based. 20g/L sodium hydroxide and 50g/L Alkaline salt UN 1760. Peels it off with a squirt and rinse, no scrubbing. Be warned though, that degreaser is just as bad for you as acid and will burn if left on your skin (corrosive Eight) so be careful if you use it.

Nice work! :p Looking really good there, I love the look of fresh alloy. Just make sure you clean out your oil galleries for any grit that may have found it's way inside ;)
