Yeah I would like to but I am short on money - spent way too much on this and other projects over the last week or so. If I can find the AWD running gear cheaply enough then yes I will do it.

RWD or subi 6sp, you'll break everything else and wished you'd done it differently...

Not a hope in hell of ever having enough money to justify a 6 speed.

Rotaries don't have much torque and it is torque that kills gearboxes. well that and bad driving style and unsympathetic 6000rpm side step launches of which I will do neither. I will be driving it hard but not that hard.

Plus it will be remaining a basically stock motor - I think the put out a whopping 147kw - I will up the boost a little but don't expect any more than 180kw - something wrong if a WRX box can't handle that.

I've been running the Liberty AWD running gear and it's fine. As you said it doesn't have a lot of torque and you're only going to break gear boxes if you drop the clutch.

I have 350HP and it's lasted 5 years without an issue. The only thing I would say is use the liberty running gear if you can or at least ea82t with the thicker CVs or you'll be replacing them often.

Quick update - have sourced a Gen 2 Liberty for the running gear - and a set of Genuine STi Forester forged BBS rims in 16" and they are unbelievably light. Pics when I get them home next week.
So far total cost of the project is AUD$1500 - and I have a good body, suspension, rear end, gearbox, front end, brakes, motor and rims - only thing missing is a radiator and exhaust and the usual bits and pieces for making it all fit together.

Picked up the donor car and the wheels yesterday.

The car :

Image

The wheels - which were bought separately and then put on the donor car so that the missus thinks they came with the car and I haven't spent as much money as I have :-)
These wheels are just so light - even with the big 21/5/60/16 offorad tyres they still weigh substantially less than something like the std WRX rims.
Will be getting low profile tyres on them when they go on the Brumby.

And the engine - which may be temporarily fitted to get the car registered :

Progress has been made :

hmm so what do a bike rack and a soccer goal have to do with building a car ??

Well they both needed welding and since I have never welded before in my life I though it might be a good idea to practice on something that won't kill me if it fails.

So here are my first 2 attempts at any sort of welding :

Image

Image

Not good but not bad for my first go.

Yeah not too bad! takes practice to get travel speed correct and keep the electrode/gun in a straight line but when you do they'll look 10x better.
Will it ever end!?

Good one not to bad as it looks from here at least I don't see alot of undercut. It just takes practice and one of the best things that you could invest in is one of those new automatic darkening welding helmets yeah I know they can be expensive but I got one of the net for around $60 it sure does make life just that little bit easier especially for me now that my eyesight is a little on the poor side eheheh. This is the helmet I got

A good deal and good to deal with also.
Keep at it and work safe.
I like the look of the toy in your neighbours back yard does he donate any fish your way ehehh.

Done some more welding and its getting better but still far from perfect :

Image

But good enough to make this :

Image

Total cost for the rotisserie is a shade over AUD$200 :-)

Which means I can do this :

Image

And strip the Brumby down to this :

Image

Image

Remarkably almost rust free - just a bit under the passenger door (however the front guard where it bolts to the car just here is almost totally gone :-( ), in the tray where the cab meets it and under the windscreen cowl. There's a few dents under the body too that will need to be fixed but pretty happy with it overall.

Next project is to clean the grease and crap off it, strip the running gear from the donor Liberty and start fitting it to the Brumby.

Looks like a cheap sand blasting gun & a couple of bags of grit may be in order, I used one when I restored my Landcruiser and it was invaluable.
