Anyway to check oil pressure? Could a worn pump be causing lifters to starve?

is it a lifter or is it a gudgeon pin nicking on the side of the bore ?

Check oil pressure with a gauge in the oil pressure switch hole - either a diagnostic gauge or an after market dash gauge - capilary or electric ....

You will be better off puling this baby down before something breaks ....

You sure it is lifter noise and not a a gudgeon rattling against the bore and piston.

If you found a gudgeon clip in the oil, it is time to get the engine out as Gary and Jonno have both said.

Brave man saying that steptoe but i think it is likely.
These would be Hydrolic lifters wouldn't they? Other wise i would have said your valve clearances need doing again.

How does a C clip fall out?
Bloody hard to get in and out
Doesn't seem like the sort of thing that could just "fall" out

Not sure how it is on the ea82, but it could possibly drop out of the cylinder and into the sump at BDC. Id deffinately be pulling out the plugs at the least to see if the gudgeon clips are there. At the very least it can tell you which piston it is so you only remove that head. Bugger :(.

Yes it usually will only come out if incorrectly installed or damaged during install. They are a prick to put in thru the holes in the cylinders.

got me stuffed how the middle pistons are done on the variety of H6s starting with ER27 in the XT6 Vortex

James, sounds like the clip didn't go back in correctly. They are painful to get right but looks like the engine needs to come out again.

Hook up an oil pressure gauge and you'll be able to tell what's going on by that. I can tell when my engine is overheating by looking at the oil pressure...

The other thing to check out is the cam box. From memory there's a little ball and spring setup in there that must regulate the oil pressure to the lifters. Make sure this is all cleaned out and the spring isn't clagged up with crud. A new spring might not be a bad idea either.

Agreed. If you're lucky it'll be one on the access hole side. If your hanging out with Murphy, it'll be on the opposite side to the access hole :(

Probably never went in properly - which makes me think that it is the one on the access hole side of the piston. When we rebuild the engines these clips that are on the opposite side of the access hole go in before the piston is installed in the engine - saves trying to put an extra clip on through a tiny access hole...

Best of luck with it - Let us know how you get a long with it. Hopefully you've dodged a VERY large bullet!

I'd be removing the access holes and seeing if it's one of the close ones before going to the extremes of pulling pistons out!

If it is an outer you'd be lucky if it was one of the front ones and not behind the water pump.....no engine removal !
