Stand up ...
+1 for a job well done ... !
Does Tweety have a alarm system ?
If so, you could add a few motion detectors & couple them with a VFL siren ( piezo siren ) + pre recorded message like "Stand Back MF" in best James Cagney voice ...
Cheers, Bantum ...

Good idea bantum.
So economy is steady between 10.1 and 10.9 l/100 kms . Achieving 28mpg towing is amazing.. means nearly 500 kms range, 50 ltr tank. Never got near that with the Vw 1916cc engine not towing. What is good is up steep hills down to 80kph can kickdown or back off throttle and engine just maintains speed much more often than it used to moSt impressed

That's an awesome fuel economy statistic - hopefully it keeps up for you in the long term after the engine is fully worn in!
Are the four (or five including Sylvester!) of you home yet or have you just kept going with these cheap fuel prices?
I'm happy to house sit (as you've got a decent shed )!
Happy times mate!
Cheers
Bennie

We arrived home this afternoon. Longest leg, Orbost to Strathbogie via Omeo.
Also the worst economy at 11.1 L/100kms and no wonder, from Bruthen to Omeo were long uphill slopes. The VW auto doesnt cope with these well although much better than pre reconditioned engine. eg. Now the trike will slow to say 70kph and often hold it there, previously kickdown necessary. Also 98RON gives more power and economy. So fuel consumption ranged from 10.3 to 11.1 L/100 kms. 25-28mpg. All up weight was around 1000kgms not far off the Brumby unladened and with one extra wheel as I towed the camper. Wind resistance on Tweety would be greater than most cars I believe.
Must now do the tappets all were set at 16 thou for run in. Will set to stock 10/14. in/exh. will have to wait for the dyno tune. Weber performance who sold me the 38/38 carbie are keen to do that. So rejetting could bring some nice surprises in output. Stay tuned.
I'm very happy with the economy. Most pleased with the easy cold idle, never stalls, zero oil consumption/leaks...that new motor feel.

Oil cooler for the tyranny? No, not worth the effort.
The tranny came in the Type 3 VW fasty, square back and sedan (notchback) and in my case with slightly lower final drive the same tranny came in the kombi. (final drive is 3.9 instead of 3.67:1
So, it pushed kombi weighing ? 2000 kgms plus load ? say 1000kgms = 3 tons. 3 times Tweety plus camper.
Some pics coming here soon.

Thanks Bennie. Yeh, nice lookout at Daniels lookout (think its called that)
Interesting today. Did the tappets. All werent much off stock gaps 10 and 14 thou. My Platinum plugs (new when engine was new) were set at 32 thou. Adjusted them to 38 thou. Went for a run...mmm lots more pick up and revved out quicker and smoother to 4500 rpm.
Then checked the timing and was 6 deg BTDC. Suppose to be 8 ,10 or even 12. Wondered why. Seems that the angle I put the light on the pulley didnt show the true mark well. painted the mark white and rest of pulley black so its clear. Gave it 11-12 degrees. Readjusted mixtures screws. Test run. now seriously, it shouldn't be a guide to power output but sometimes it happens without knowing it will happen. From rest full throttle and front wheel lifts off ground about 6 inches.
Hasnt done that since supercharged engine. Totally under control and a thrill. An ea81 on song pushing only 650 kgms can be fun. Any higher though and upon ground contact can damage the steering neck.
Still waiting for funds to get that dyno. (psst, wife wants a swimming pool. Thats not where the cost is...its the fencing/permits etc. etc etc)

That's awesome mate! Can't wait to see the results after the dyno tune!Tweety wrote:Interesting today. Did the tappets. All werent much off stock gaps 10 and 14 thou. I seriously hope this is the setup you'll run hassle free for many moons to come! Stoked for you so far!
Cheers mate

Today I did an economy test. First chance riding the trike without towing the camper. Melbourne and return. Total 446 kms fuel = 42.6 litres. = 9.55 L/100 kms or 30 mpg
I'm stoked about this. Speed was 105-110 kph constant to Berwick other side of Melbourne. Used 95 RON. Have been using 98 but 95 runs a little smoother and 98 showed no improvement over 95 in any way.
Spark plug gap had been raised from 32 thou to 38 thou with a little improvement in acceleration and response. Dont know if I should make it larger say 43 thou as recommended in some threads on USMB. Timing has gradually been raised from 8 degrees BTC to now 12 degrees and think it is right on now. maybe even a little too far might back it off to 10. As you guys know it runs rich. With these adjustments the symptoms of richness has deminished a little.
Can honestly say that the smoothness of this motor now is amazing. Balancing must be worth the cost. Certainly the larger manifold and larger carb 38/38 experiment has been successful and that makes me pleased.
