MY style rear driveshafts (DOJ on both ends) but with the longer L series axles.vincentvega wrote:so thats standard joints with longer arms and the pivot point moved all the way forward?
thats a shitload of travel! you could do the low ass end thing like all the comp trucks
I needed to do something about it. For Gundy we clocked the torsion bar up one tooth on the spline which solved the binding issues with the inner trailing arm bush but lifted the rear ride height. This screwed up the handling and loaded up the front struts so that they actually got hot.

Can't see why you couldn't get as much travel as some the volks rear end buggies.I had a pair of early turbo l shafts, thicker shafts, that ran a doj both ends. They maybe stronger than stardard l shafts or are yours turbo shafts?
The development is starting to swing along.Whens the next race?

How much travel are you talking Will?stamp_licker wrote:Can't see why you couldn't get as much travel as some the volks rear end buggies.I had a pair of early turbo l shafts, thicker shafts, that ran a doj both ends. They maybe stronger than stardard l shafts or are yours turbo shafts?

Next race on the horizon is the NT Titles in March.
Did they now? Mine certainly did but I didn't realise that L wagons were equipped like Libertys with the outer CV until I looked under one the other day. I'm using 2WD front inner DOJs all accross the rear but the mock-up shaft in the pics has std MY rear DOJs.Captain Obvious wrote:yeah will is right, the rx turbos has doj both ends!!
Whats the diametre of the rear turbo shafts? I presume the splines are the same as non-turbo and MY

I check dia when i get a chance.Pretty sure splines are the same.I fitted a wrx inner doj onto a l turbo shaft with a turbo outer doj on the rear of my wagon. The doj on both ends gave me more travel than a L cv outer. With a cv outer it used to pull the shaft out of the diff.Tried a few different combos and most ea and ej bitswere interchangable.brumbyrunner wrote:

I've been reviewing some of the images on my hosts site and I realised we never got around to posting pics of the new engine and removeable front end that were done before Goondiwindi. So here they are. The removeable radiator support panel that Brett designed makes it a lot easier to work on and remove the engine.

Work on the rear suspension is progressing slowly but surely. This is the mocked-up swingarm that was in the previous pics.
I've since changed the design slightly and started working out where the rear coilovers will need to be mounted.
And I've stripped the old stuff out of the racecar ready for the real thing.

This is the last shot of the old mounting points because they are gone, gone, gone.
I've cut the back of the cab out to make way for the new crossmember....
...and removed the torsion bar mounting points and some other sheetmetal to clear the new trailing arms.

Will Murray have your new shocks done in time?
What are you doing with your old ones?
Is it still going to have to come down here for tubs/cage?
I wish I was there playing cars too.
I think so.
Dunno, but they're no good to your Outback.
I hope not.
Me too. Bring your tig.
Just spoke to my alloy guy. He is still super keen to do the dash (and anything else). I will be driving to town at the end of the month so if I can get the wheels back on by then, and there's absolutely no way of getting then on now, I will leave the racecar at his place until it's finished. Then there's a bit of wiring to be done....

I started to build the crossmember that runs across the rear firewall yesterday. It has to notched about 25mm to clear the tailshaft, so to make sure the notch was cut out in the right place I decided to bolt the diff back in using my solid mount diff hangers. The tailshaft is about 20mm to the right of centerline at the diff so it always "looks" crooked. Then, to make sure I'd built the hangers square and true, I rigged up a stringline down both sides of the car. Thankfully everything is within a few mils of centre. I just need to move the diff rearwards 5 or 10mm.
Meanwhile I have ordered the heim joints for the swingarms. I was planning to just use bushes for durability and cost but the adjustability of the heims will be handy if I don't get the geometry spot on. The joints I'm using are 7/8" x 7/8" with misalignment adapters that step the bolt size down to 5/8".

Yes, it's not something I did without trying to find alternatives. But trying to reinforce the rear firewall by plating and gusseting was starting to look pretty messy compared to this. The most severe thing, structually, that I've chopped out, is where the torsion bar used to mount. Imagine removing a foot of chassis rail behind the cab of Wilbur's Hilux and you'll get the idea. What spins me out more is that I cant seem to make it stronger without making it heavier.Captain Obvious wrote:looking good br, must be a bit of a spin out just cutting the floor away hoping you can put something back in!!!!!
