The Brumbyrunner Project
Well after much delay, here is the build-up thread for my class 8 offroad racecar.
Although it looks like my long term registered Brumby it is actually a clone that I bought off a mate as I couldn't bring myself to cut up my good one.
It is a bog stock '92 model with aircon, genuine 13" white rims, alloy bullbar and 250,000kms on the clock.
To comply with CAMS and compete in the AORC it needs a certified welded rollcage, 5 point harnesses, UHF & some safety stuff. Thats all. Everything else I do to it is voluntary.
For those who don't know the off-road racing class structure, classes 7 & 8 are for 4WD vehicles up to 6 litre engine capacity. Class 7 is for stock 4WDs and class 8 is for modified ones. In the CAMS manual, the limit to class 7 modifications take up 2 pages. For class 8 it's just under half a page.
I especially like this phrase-:
"The original shape of the body must be from a series production four-wheel drive automobile..."
Thats about the only restriction to class 8.
So now I have to strip it and send it off to have the cage put in.

why are you using it as a class 8?
the things ive seen for class 8 are like crusers with 350 chevs and hiluxs with worked 5L commie v8s in em i couldnt see a brumby seriously competing with something like that. i would have thought class 7 would have been better??? or are there some serious mods planed?

Brumby Boy - Class 7 would definately be a cheaper option but with the limited ability to modify, especially the suspension (which must remain true to the original design except for one additional shock per wheel), and the motor (where you must use an EA81), you would not be very competitive.
So I'm up against big heavy V8 Patrols and Cruisers.

It took me 3 full days to strip the ute down to the bare bodyshell. It only has enough left on it to allow the wheels to stay on and the steering wheel still hooked up. All up there are only 21 bolts to remove to make it a bare shell.
I cant believe how light it is. I wish I had time to weigh the shell. I did manage to weigh it before I started and it was a neat 1000kg with the bullbar etc still on.
Next stop is my chassis guy for the 8 point rollcage and seamwelding.

Ah tru yes i wasnt thinking about engine mods when i posted. with the ej20 turbo and some serious suspention it shoud compete well seeing that its at least half the weight and will probably put down as much power...

You'd think with all our technological advances they could put a decent camera in my phone!MechaWagon wrote:Anyone else want to put $20 in to buy Brumby Runner a decent digi cam?
Saw a 7mp kodak on telly just then for $200, that's only 10 of us!!!!

They are so easy to move around on your own too. And you dont need a very solid rotisserie...Suby Wan Kenobi wrote:They arent real heavy when stripped the one i have out the front without engine and box i can easily lift at the front.

The first job was to work out how to get this tyre to fit.
It's a Goodyear Wrangler 30x9.5R15 and it's a little bit close to the firewall. It looks okay but the ride height is very high with no weight in the car.
So with a heap of panelwork/time/patience/money we should be able to get it to fit.
I've since changed my mind on the Wranglers though so if anyone wants a second spare......it's a Bretts place.

i'd rather see the money go to the car, but thats unlikely
