Thanks mate! That really means a lot to me. My hurdle in this conversion is now the gearbox - the wiring is nailed! That was originally my worry...

Looking good there... i hate having oily or dirty engines, no wonder why mine is always clean - free of oil leaks, if I see a leak its fixed by next day!

grab some new cam cover seals. You wont need to use silicone and you will get another few hundred thousand kms out of them

Too late! I've just done one with silicone and will be doing the second shortly! I'm fine with using silicone on this part - the bit that really pissed me off with the EA's was the cam box channel, it was cleaning it out that I really hated doing! I do like the look of the EJ heads - 6 bolts, all externally 'mounted' and no dodgy cam box

I hope to upload some photos later tonight, that said, if I get into some drinks with the boys first you might have to wait til tomorrow... Time will tell ;)

My Splendor in the Shed!

Post by El_Freddo » Fri Jul 24, 2009 8:53 pm

Here's today's effort: I got some oil seals for the camshafts and the crankshaft. Glad I did, when I took off the first cam gear (driver's side) this is what I found:

Image

For the passenger's side, I took off the block that mounts to the head, its literally a spacer. I didn't get a photo of the silicone on it when I put it back on but this is what it looks like without the silicone:

Image

The new seal before it was properly installed:

Image

If its possible, this is how I usually tap the seals into place - it doesn't always work due to shaft length. Just make sure you take it nice and slow otherwise you can compress the seal:

Image

The seal installed: I did compress it a little bit but I'm sure it will be fine - if not I'll have an oil leak...

Image

Here's the cam covers cleaned and re-sealed. The first one is the driver's side; I showed a photo of this before I started cleaning in an above post:

Image

Image

This is the front of the engine after being cleaned up, seals installed and the water pump cleaned, sealed and re-fitted; its looking really good:

Image

That's about all I got done today on the mechanical package. When I got the seals I also picked up some boots for the power steering rack, ordered some new tie rod ends then closer to the swap date I'll get a pair of new ball joints too. I'm thinking of replacing the bushes on the front end while its all apart - its just $$$ that I'll need to find.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to work some stuff out on the gearbox - the backlash, which could take some time to do... fun fun.

I must say that it feels good to be able to see some progress - especially after the set back of having to wash the casings again to rid them of the corrosion spots...

Cheers

Looking good!!! I never used silicone in these areas - just replaced the seals but having extra seals is good...

Yeah, I've done this since having subi's - they've got so many nooks and crannies! Its all good until you have to pull the part off and clean it up to put it back on again... hopefully I won't be doing this for a long time. Even if I have to do a head gasket I won't have to remove the cam cover - a huge bonus over the design of the EA where everything has to come off to get to the head!

I'm starting to toss up wether or not to replace the sump gasket - think I'll get one priced up and go from there, it'll be a little more effort but a lot easier to do while on the engine stand.

there is no sump gasket just uses goo, although there is a rubber sealing ring in there for about 15 bucks part number is 11122AA340

would really recommend changing water pump and thermostat seal for peace of mind

Thanks frog, I found that out yesterday and have since re-sealed the sump with fresh goo.
FROG wrote:would really recommend changing water pump and thermostat seal for peace of mind
I've already done that :D

Yesterday I got the cambelt covers and the cam belt installed, then I got stuck into the sump seal. It doesn't sound like much was done but the work was rather involved - particularly with the hydrolic tensioner being compressed for re-installment.

I'll get pics up later.

Today I didn't get anything done - had too much sauce last night with too little food in the stomach :???: So hopefully during the week I'll get the gearbox back together, then do a shuffle in the shed to fit Ruby Scoo in for the swap.

With the gearbox I've been thinking that the cases really arn't going to be so different from eachother that the swap will drastically change the backlash that was set from factory - so I'm not going to bother working it out, just bolt it all together then workout the position for the diff in relation to the pinion shaft.

Its close now, I can feel it!

Cheers

For the sump I used some grey stuff that's temp resistant to +200 degrees and has something special about it for torque applications - I got it for the gearbox but decided to use it on the sump. It sets hard.

For the rest of the sealing work I've used hi temp silicone (red) stuff that is sensor safe. I'll be using this on the exhaust gaskets as well. It works well once its set and remains flexible. I've used this on the oil seals, water pump and went a bit overboard by using it on the cam covers for 4wd'n.

Okay, so as you know, saturday I got the cam belt back on - had some fun with the tensioner that had to be compressed. I also re-sealed the sump since the engine is on the stand and not in the car. It doesn't sound like a lot was acheived but it was pretty labour intensive - especially cleaning up the sump and the engine block for re-sealing...

So here it is, I cleaned up all the cam covers good and proper - they got a silicone treatment too - over the top but anyway. Here are some pics:

Image

This is the little bugger that we had some trouble with and how we dealt with it:

After the pin was pulled:

The cambelt installed - it is in the two pics above, but this is the whole view:

The covers installed, and I tried my "artistic flair" while I was at it:

Then the sump off:

Image

That's about it for saturday's efforts - I didn't do anything on sunday except "relax"...

This evening I got working on the gearbox again, I've now stalled until I get some seals in - hopefully I'll have a complete gearbox seal kit coming in within the next two days. I'll get a pic up once I've re-sized it.

So for now its sitting on the bench with all the bits in it ready to go back together. I guess I'll start working on the engine crossmember stuff tomorrow...

Cheers

Not as clean as I'd like it - under the manifold is filthy, and that part is not coming off, especially for the reason of cleaning...

Once its in the objective will be to get it dirty
