RS wagon...
G'day all,
Whoops... How did this happen? Well, I've been wanting one to drive as a daily for some time and recently an opportunity presented itself so I went for it:
Coming home after a trip on the ferry from Tassy:
Apart from some minor surface rust (that will be copping some attention) above the front left wheel and a spot or two showing up above the windscreen, this is the worst damage on the vehicle, the rest is very straight:
First thing first, before taking it home to Mrs El_Freddo I decided to give it a wash:
And she scrubbed up well, I was stoked!

The downer is that there's a dead engine fitted - it runs, but badly to say the least. How they drove this thing on and off the Ferry I have no idea!
I had a couple of ideas as to what the problem could be so that was the first thing I did once it was off the trailer - pull some bits down to investigate:
But nothing eventuated from that, it's a dead engine that needs to be replaced or rebuilt. The engine in there at the moment has a noise like a leprechaun with a jackhammer in cylinder one (driver's front cylinder if I've got my numbering correct from memory) and a smoke plume appears from the exhaust and under the bonnet from dodgy crank case ventilation pipe work as soon as you load up the engine to drive it - engine running is just plain nasty all round, I've never heard anything this bad before!
I'd like an original block and heads to keep her completely stock but finding one (just finding ONE at the moment) to rebuild hasn't presented itself yet. I'd rather put the money into the block I want to build than build one I don't really want long term or have a punt on the condition of rings and bottom end of another block I could purchase with a "yeah she's good mate" type credential.
Once finished investigating I managed to manoeuvre her into the backyard for a pic with her family:
Then into the shed until I can get more time to start some work on her:
^ Mmmm... smokey shed :/
In the meantime I really want to rip the interior out to give it a blast to remove the farm from her, give the underside a good scrub up and eventually touch up any surface rust present and see what else will need to be done suspension wise for a roady before she goes in.
Other bits I'll be looking out for is a new rear tailgate in white as the one on there at the moment is pretty banged up and the rear garnish is damaged, the tail gate has paint chips and dents at the top of the door where the gap between the door and the roof line is.
Overall I'm stoked to have another project on the go, this one will be a lot more short term than my previous ones if all goes well. The engine issue is the hold up
Cheers

Nice one!
So how long before it gets a lift, offroad modded gearbox, etc etc and takes over touring duties (a little more comfy)?

Nice one I reckon those RS wagons (are they all turbo? scuse the ignorance!) have a certain appeal about them Wouldn't mind having one myself.
Sad the engine is a dud though, I could imagine you're going to have some difficulties finding the bits to repair/replace it.

Will it ever end!?

Toonga, what's wrong with a tow bar? Spray it up black and she's sporty yet practical. Removing it would only add weight - I'd have to carry a shifter to fit it when I need it :P
Sam, the RS badge as all turbos. Parts for a rebuild are not hard to come by as it's basically a standard rebuild - WRX parts will fit too. It's the original RS block and heads that I'm chasing that will be difficult to find on a tight budget (because I'm a typical old skool Subaru owner in that regard). It'll be a great daily once it's on the road
I'm just impatient to get it sorted...
Cheers

Yeah mate, they match the rims and wod fit perfectly if not for the "fancy" long chrome wheel nuts it's sporting atm. Otherwise I'd have a pic of them fitted.Bumpty wrote:Haha nice! Not matching to the wheels though?
I can't wait to have some time to start wirking on this. I should upload a video so we can "put bets" on what what we think the problem is. It's definitely in cylinder #1 - which makes me think it's dropped a valve or something like that...

So after a complete change of direction for my weekend I still managed to get what I wanted done and a little bit more - at the expense of our family rock that needs its inlet gaskets replaced (VT commo).
For Bumpty - the lifted RS (this is all it will get!):
One of the rims with the centre cap on, it's only sitting on the studs as the nuts don't allow the caps to fit:
Clean pics - before first with the after pic next for each area:
Front Right wheel guard:
Rear Right wheel guard (not much to really see with this one):

Underside:
Rear spare wheel well:
^ that's after, I don't have a before shot of that area. Came up tops, it looked pretty much the same as the underside of the cab.
Inside of the rims (same rim):
I found one shot boot on the rear left. Thinking about it I didn't check bearings tie rods or ball joints for play - that'll be on the to do list. Found out it's got an xforce down pipe if that means anything to anyone...
So now I'm pretty much waiting on an engine as the main thing needed as well as a thorough detailing of the interior.
I'm also thinking of a set of new rotors front and rear - partly to give the RWC dude an idea that the vehicle has had the go over but also because the current ones don't look too flash in the thickness department.
That's it for now. Next move is to tear down this block and find the best place in town to get it looked at.
Cheers
