ej20t engine into L series
If the car is for racing then there's no question, use an EJ turbo AWD gearbox (the ones designed for EJ turbo engines). Also use punctuation

Hi guys, I haven't posted on this website for a long time since i sold my 85 touring wagon 3 years ago since i have been floating around on p-wrx since i own an MY99.
But lately i have been thinking an EJ20T conversion on an Lseries Wagon and from what i can gather you can keep the dual range....?
i will also need a cross member (Keffa might need to speak to you about that when the time comes) and hopefully i can pick up a 1996 engine for about $1600 already with the loom(i'm hoping) otherwise again Keffa your the guy.
I think i have decided to buy the engine alone instead of the half cut as i wont need all the other bits and pieces that come with it. and maybe upgrade brakes later.
thanks for any input?
Scott

Keffa went through....what was it.......4 gearboxes? It's highly advisable to do the turboawd conversion at the same time. Altho this isn't as good for offroading due to no low range.
Keffa also sold his motor quite a while ago, but still has the crossmember.

Yeah I run an Outback gearbox in my L series with EJ20G. It works okay, hasnt broken in the years I've had it there, but the dual range is useless, might aswell not have it. You'd really have to invest in the aftermarket LOW range gears for it. THey are expensive.
Your better off using an early Lib gearbox because you can swap the L series low range gears into those - check AlpineRaven's thread guide for this.
Apparently some early models of Impreza awd boxes actually have proper low range from stock, but quite hard to find these.

guys, what do you think of a 96-98 WRX half cut with 39,000kms minus gearbox but has everything needed for the conversion for $3,200???
also again with the gear box questions, is the L series and Libery hybrid the best option for an EJ20T in the L series for offroad. I ideally would like to have constant AWD with a decent hi-lo and like previously said by ANdrew T the outback one isn't much chop. also looking for durablility
Couldnt find much on the early imprezas..?
all thoughts appreciated,

The standard low range in the outback boxes is shite as AndrewT has said. But you can, with a bit of work, fit the L series low range into these boxes - PeeJay did it and wrote up how to do it, the 4.11 crown wheel of the front diff needs some shaving to fit the larger L series low range gearing. It can be done if you really want to do it yourself to save on some $$$.

No, my understanding is you can only do this to the early Liberty awd boxes. The later model Outback boxes (like mine, a 1999 one) cannot have this done, although there is an after-market low range gear available to buy (well there was at some stage) but it was ridiculously expensive.El_Freddo wrote:The standard low range in the outback boxes is shite as AndrewT has said. That used to be the case, but I've since figured out how to do it and I think someone else has done one as well.AndrewT wrote:No, my understanding is you can only do this to the early Liberty awd boxes.
