Which WRX steering rack fits L series

Post by H-top » Fri Feb 12, 2010 10:22 pm

G'day,

I need a new steering rack for my vortex and wondering which rack is or near "bolt in" and if so, which tie rod ends should I use?

Cheers,
Sam

GC8 (pre-2000), and you use your existing tie rod ends.

i've got a GC rack i'm going to sell very very soon (basically when i can be bothered). it's just missing the oil lines on the rack itself - but you can use your existing rack lines to replace them

The splines on the uni match the column and the rack?
Or need to weld the 2 different ends?

everything works. straight swap for GC8 only. post GC8 the spline is fine rather than course and requires mods to work

gc8 / gen 1 liberty rack will only fit a L series with a lift kit

That has been my experience too. The splines come out at a worse angle than the original L rack, but if you have a lift kit it gives the uni joints enough room to soak it up.

Although Outback Bloke rekons he's fitted plenty of EJ racks to early Subaru's without experiencing this issue.

i have to admit when i was fitting my GC8 rack, i wouldnt have thought there would be fitment issues with an unlifted car. another alternative if it was an issue would be to lower the rack slightly?
