Honestly it doesn't look too bad but I'm not a fan of that bit that hangs down in the middle.guyph_01 wrote:Yes i Know Paul......, You don't like it!!

The nuts
the file below is for the TRANSMISSION AND DIFFERENTIAL SECTION for the 1998 outback
http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/Le ... ECTION.pdf
page 191 tells you which diff you have, page 199 will give you an insight into how it comes out, and page 209 is the start of the procedure.

Hummmm, What do you guys think?? does this mean the engine may have slightly over heated???? lol
Well The plan is to wack a set of head gaskets on the engine and see if it runs again:) Paul seems to think it will be fine and the trip from Joondalup to my place the engine ran better than expected and only stopped at the last minute!!
Also The previous idiot had thread lock the crank pulley and ohh god Paul battled to get that thing out...
NOTE: anyone got rear ej22 timing covers and a gen2 cam angle sensor locally?
Thx

Yep.. you need to bring some CCs.. I lost a lot of fluid trying to take that pulley off

Umm... There's something wrong here!guyph_01 wrote:NOTE: anyone got rear ej22 timing covers and a gen2 cam angle sensor locally?

I've seen that cam cover melt before - on my EA82 that originally came in Ruby Scoo. That engine was a throw away for two reasons - 1) it was an EA82 and 2) cylinder #3 or 4 had a crack down the bore that you could catch your finger on. And this thing drove ok - felt like it really needed a tune up.
I would believe that the EJ is much better at "recovery" after being punished like this. But I've not had a direct experience with doing what you're about to do Guyph, I'll be interested in the outcome and hope it all turns out for the better.
If not I'm sure you won't have an issue rustling up another good EJ22
Cheers
Bennie
Yes i know, I also wasn't to keen to put that engine back in the car. yes the plastic covers are melted but did you notice the oil seal??? I seen melted plastic covers before but never melted oil seals.
You know it's been about 5 years now that i joined and have been playing with subaru's ever since with you guys help. One MAJOR thing i finally learnt after all those years, When Paul shake's his head and says NO don't do it or no it can't be done, DON'T bother, no point trying.
And when Paul says yes it will work or yes it can be done, It always the case!!!...
So yeah, Paul said that he thinks the engine will run again, I think i'll listen:)
LOL

I like how Guy says the previous idiot - is he suggesting he is the current idiot ?
Ah, the bloody English language I love it when speakers of English as second language tell me they are "having it off tomorrow" Is that a double entendre? ( pinching a French word I can't spell )
I was thinking have only seen thse drooping belt cover backs on cooked EA82's and they must have been bloody hot for quite a while! Those seals did not melt did they Guy ? Just looks like leaking oil turned to grease from your pics

No the bolt was easy to get out, What i meant was the crank pulley was thread locked to the crank shaft!!! Who does that???
Oil is black!! lol
So far all the lift blocks are made and installed on the car, I think it the first time i haven't cross-threaded a nut installing a lift kit. Paul will be proud!! LOL. Now i'll get the strut top draw at work and laser cut:)
Tomorrow i'll start to get the engine back in..

Looking at the inside the engine appears to look ok, really won't know the extent of the damage the heating has done until we can do a compression test.guyph_01 wrote:Well The plan is to wack a set of head gaskets on the engine and see if it runs again:) Paul seems to think it will be fine and the trip from Joondalup to my place the engine ran better than expected and only stopped at the last minute!!
What you mean it stopped? you told me you turned it off when you got home and it just pissed out oil like it was water??
It will run for sure but you will need to be on the look out for a replacement, as I can't say how long it will last.guyph_01 wrote:So yeah, Paul said that he thinks the engine will run again, I think i'll listen

Very much like grease but the seals were that rock hard, they came out in pieces.guyph_01 wrote:Need to ask Paul about the seals, he took them off:)
The Harmonic Balancer pulley was easy to get off, the problem was the Timing Crank Pulley.. this was a SOAB to get off !! and I'm still waiting to replace that lost fluid Guy??guyph_01 wrote:No the bolt was easy to get out, What i meant was the crank pulley was thread locked to the crank shaft!!!
