Ok so my engine is sitting in my shed all nice and shiny wrapped in industrial glad wrap.
My heads arent on yet they are seperate still.
And now i have a weber to stick on!!! Thankyou Tweety

Ok here we go what i got done.

Strip Short Motor & Inspect 80
Remove Seized Studs 40
Hotwash block and parts 150
Rebore & Hone 220
Deck Block 130
Resize Rods 168
Linish Crank 35
Assemble Short Engine 280

Hotwash 30
Dismantle and inspect 50
Bead Blast 70
Reface Valves 40
Cut Valve seats & Vac test - Performance Seats 104
Set valve Stem tip heights 28
CC Head 55
Mill Head 110
Supply and fit welsh Plugs x6 42
Porting 500
Clean and Assemble 60

Strip clean & reassemble oil pump, clean up dizzy 50

reground Cam shaft (this was calculated to my engine specs) 268
refaced lifters 89
0.02" oversized pistons 122.80
chrome rings 72.50
rod bearings 28.70
main bearings 45.90
bottom end gasket set 54

It has been honed out to 1.83L
0.5mm oversized pistons
The compression bumbed up to 9.5:1 we didnt want to go any further as i still want to run on Regular 91
Ported out as much as possible. I mean as far as possible!
And my Cam was sent off interstate to be ground. They collaborated with me and they chose some specs that should be good for what i want. A really torque y engine for offroad. I have the specs sheet printed out but don’t understand any of it. Will post if anyone asks.
This should be a pretty interesting engine with a weber and sports exhaust.

I like your build thread.

Makes me wonder if it's worth doing that to a EA82.

Just in case it's too hard to do a EJ conversion in NSW,
I could do something like that to a EA82 and save money by not needing an engineers cert.

Are you still able to run 10:1 compression on 91 octane, or do you need higher grade?

Imho, the EA82 is a bit of a pig,
so if I have to stay with a EA82 I'd rather tune it for 98 octane with more torque and horsepower.
In theory, a motor with higher compression should be more fuel efficient
and I've always wished my Subaru could go further on a full tank...
or make HEAPS more torque and horsepower at the same fuel economy, even if it's on 98 octane.
An added bonus, I already have a good new radiator for the EA82,
so the extra heat from higher compression wouldn't matter.

Umm we were going to go 10:1 but I think it was just a bit too much.
Yeah ea82 with timing belts and that. Phh put an ea81 in. No cert needed.
I chose to keep it on 91 for two reasons. Cost and availability. We were thinking about 95 but that is the hardest to get. Even in surburban / city areas let alone the country.
And 98 is way too expensive for me.
Yeah if we upped the compression and ran on 95/8 it would have given better performance.
But I didn't wanna have the extra fuel money, and don't think il need that power. It's the only thing power wise we haven't done yet apart from a snorkel.

It's not just the compression ratio.

It's the combination of CR and combustion chamber design that determines minimum octane.

The EA81 has an inefficient wedge/bathtub 2 valve chamber that can't compete with modern 4 and 5 valve semi-hemi heads.

To Cam,

Make sure to deburr the combustion chamber edge after surface grinding the heads.

Can you post some pics of your engine, especially the heads.

Very interested in what you got for $500 worth of porting.

Umm il ask mudking about that debuting.
They are really shiny and smooth.
Yeah sure will do when I unwrap them tomorrow night.
I have some pics but you can't see much with the glad wrap.
It's really about 350-400 for porting.
He said because of the design it was really hard to do, so a bit more labour cost.
I got a phone call saying this would happen, he hasn't done one of these before.
He actually stuffed up, but it's now all fixed.

i think once in the ea81 will pull very strong and will make better power then when new. are you still using the 4sp?

Yeah it'll be in the ute either Wednesday or Sunday.
And yes it will find itself a dyno soon after. Been advised by tony knight, the engine builder.
And by tweety to get the weber jets absolutely correct.
This is if my 1 year old fuel isn't jelly yet.

For the l series box, on a simple way, can someone please describe what is needed to make them fit?

From what I've gathered so far for when I convert mine one big issue is the tailshaft (L series being 2 piece, fitting a center bearing carrier to the car) If you don't have any body lift you might need to bash the trans tunnel a bit. G/box mounts are slightly different between the two, some mods needed there, You need a combination of flywheel/pressure plate and mod the pedal box to suit L series pedal and cable. There's also the shifter linkages which some say need cutting and shortening but others have done it without changing them.

Stop scaring the little guy....first step is buy a $100 - $200 L Sries 4WD that you can test drive - this will give you all the bits, plus a foot of 6mm bar 40mm wide and some bolts

Oh, obviously you take the diff, what about driveshafts?
Now to quietly start looking for an l series.
The only problem with this is that I don't think mum would aprichiate another car.
And after driving it I might want to keep it as one car.

you might find yourself falling in love with the 4sp. especially with the low end torque of the ea81 the 4sp utilises this better then the l series 5 sp
