sighs, not this again

well i can say that yes i never had as much fun in a 4wd as i had in wanky wagon.... BUT

i bought a swb patrol shortly after retiring the wagon. In stock form it was stronger, more capable and more comfortable, it was simply a better 4wd than my heavily modified L-series. I drove it hard and it never broke anything. I drove my wagon just as hard and it would break everytime i took it out.

Subarus are great for a toy and the wow factor that you give other 4wders is certainly awesome, but a subaru will never ever be as capable as something with live axles and a real low-range.

I was like you guys until i bought a proper 4wd and started realising the benefits.

Having said that, i lost interest in 4wding after i bought the shorty, it was simply too easy. I loved 4wding my subaru, powersliding the wagon on 18psi around bogged big 4x4s on the beach was awesome fun

Is that tyre pressure or boost?

As people have said, a subi will never be the same car as a land cruiser.

But...

A ten year old commodore isn't the same car as a new WRX either.

Not pointing the stick at you Alex, but over here this is the reason why we get the wankers that drive around in 2wd churning up tracks until they get stuck, then they engage 4wd when it's already too late. Many tracks get closed or are seasonally closed due to this sort of behaviour. Last week's trip we saw so much ***tard behaviour in our travels that it just made me sick. I now wish I had busted out the camera to make up a collection of this stupid behaviour. What's worse is that it's school holidays and children were around (foot prints in the sand), if they were witnessing this behaviour they'll think it's ok later in life too. It's a sad cycle.

Back on topic. I used to get it from Dad until recently - when we took him 4wd'n at Mt Cole 6/7 weeks ago. He's got a rangie so it's not really a real 4wd, just a glorified one. But it did him very well and he's now keen to get some better fuel storage (gas) for longer distances etc. I've not heard the "toy 4wd" or "get a real 4wd" from him since then. It'll only be a matter of time...

Last week was a blast too. Got some new things to have a go at on Ruby Scoo - 5 day's worth of food and equipment, 3 people on the way out there, 2 for most of the trip and she didn't miss a beat. Very happy with her ability.

Others, well, I tend not to get into the "get a real 4wd" situation anymore, avoidance is the best method I reckon. Everyone's got a different 4wd for a reason - and it's their own reason. I feel that 4wd'n a subi makes me think more about where I put my car on the tracks rather than "what's the biggest hill/rut/rock that I can hit" mentality.

youll find its the young tools who wreck the tracks, running around on road pressure tyres, and like you said 2wd. This gives me the shits too.

It should be an instant thing, once you get onto 4wding territory, drop your tyres. I normally went 25-30psi for gravel/rocks and 15-20psi for sand work.

I never ment for people to go out and buy a subi cause they are better my point was each to there own I would never buy a big 4wd due to personal preference but I also do go telling them how shit there big 4wd they have to compensate for other things is

I used to service Mrecedes Unimogs.

If I owned one I suppose I could say to all the LC and Patrol guys..."you want a real 4WD guys?" and point to the unimog.

I think nowadays economy if critical. So the real 4WD'ers would have that edge, for a few hours a year if lucky and running a truck the rest of the year at 18L/100kms or worse.

I enjoyed my old 60 series Landcruiser, my daily for about 8yrs ( though not the 25L per 100K's of LPG or the total re-build from the ground up including a new chassis, box, engine, tail shafts etc ) but apart from being able to jump it well over a meter in the air without worrying about anything breaking I doubt it would go half the places my Subi would in sand and I was running on 12.5" wide 33's, that's 50 inches or 1.2m in width on the road, the Subi is running 82mm in width all up and nowhere the footprint length, never had any shit about building or wasting money on mine, just a couple of people ask why I didn't do a Foz.......Simple answer is I had this sitting there and didn't need another fast car so why not make it fun in a different way....and now boost was finally sorted last week it really flies.

I think it's one thing to mutter it to mates behind the "big/real 4wd" owner's back when they do something stupid - it's another to antagonise them and flare up the argument and further the divide between "us and them"

I for one appreciate a well kitted out 4wd, regardless of make or model (unless it's a single range suburban SUV), especially if 1) the owner's put a lot of their own skill and work into it and 2) they don't drive it like a cowboy - they drive it in the way it was built for with some respect for the environment they're in.

I've always believed that spending money on your own car is more fun than buying someone else's. I could have spent 6 grand on a new car, or spent 4 and a half upgrading a one and a half car. I know which was more fun, and that's why I smile every time I get into my lil subie!!! Interestingly, everyone who drives the L loves it!
