I think it's one thing to mutter it to mates behind the "big/real 4wd" owner's back when they do something stupid - it's another to antagonise them and flare up the argument and further the divide between "us and them"

I for one appreciate a well kitted out 4wd, regardless of make or model (unless it's a single range suburban SUV), especially if 1) the owner's put a lot of their own skill and work into it and 2) they don't drive it like a cowboy - they drive it in the way it was built for with some respect for the environment they're in.

I am SO doing that!
My mate would be so annoyed.
I would love to have a video of me pulling out his troopy.
I would never let him live it down.

Steptoe, stop picking on the young 'uns :D

As for you, Brumby Kid, you shouldn't be pulling anything out in public...let alone someone else's...they call the pol-eece for things like that ;)

Teeheehee!

And back on subject... they reason people are probably razzing you about your Subies is they don't understand: It's your hobby. And you're having fun. That's the main thing!

So keep it up, all- I mean the fun with cars, people, the fun with cars!!! :p

I've always believed that spending money on your own car is more fun than buying someone else's. I could have spent 6 grand on a new car, or spent 4 and a half upgrading a one and a half car. I know which was more fun, and that's why I smile every time I get into my lil subie!!! Interestingly, everyone who drives the L loves it!

That's cool Cam.

On this forum I reckon some mums and dads would just tell their 11 years old child to read some pages here to learn about the birds and the bees.

They can simply log on and search for .......crash test dummies...lol

And give em something they can blow up for xmas.

It all comes down to personal tastes you ever like or love the subaru's or you don't. being in my fifty's and having a large assortment of car types behind me and travelling most of the east coast on and off road in 2wd or 4wd as well as company transport most of the time you can get a car through spots that only 4x4 can go by having a lsd fitted to the car like a ford panel van and driving down the fire trails to get access to work sites full of tools and parts before giving us toyota twin cabs or troopes to get bogged in. One of our sub contractors purchased subaru leone station wagons for their staff to work from newcastle to casino NSW and all sites in between I was impressed with them back then but didn't buy one that was back in the 80's. then one of the mates gets one but it had to much rust in it and didn't pass a rwc and got scraped then last year got offered a brumby it is now parked in the drive way getting fixed up for a blue slip NSW rego the youngest son buys a 03 outback has been on the sand dunes and beaches fishing but is looking at going bigger now

Tweety's earlier post brought back many memories as my first car in 1979 was a baby poo brown (4 kids I should know) Suzuki 4WD with a 540cc, 2 stroke, 3 cylinder engine that red lined at 80ks/hr.
Parents bought it for me thinking it would keep me out of trouble as it had the 80k limit. This certainly could have been the case on the road BUT I got into more trouble with its 4WD capabilites than anything else. Spose the most it cost me to get out of trouble (and the Police) was a case of beer to a backhoe driver to pull me out of a ditch pretty quickly before the authorities arrived. Very, very good 4WD.
When I was about 10 I recall while on trip to Wincannia in NSW seeing a 2 cylinder version of my Susie that was used on a sheep station and I saw it going up a very steep hill with no problems at all carrying 2 or 3 people.
I have in the past shocked "real" 4WD drivers with my bog standard 88 L series in the Barrington tops (NSW) and some of the trails up there. Their Landys and Pajeros and Nissans were expeting me to get bogged at every turn and were facinated when I followed all of them back to camp with no issues at all.
I do think some of these people are more interested in how high they can jack up their car even though they dont need to do this at all. Subaru drivers on the other hand recognize their cars capabilities and know jacking the car up increases its abilites and makes the car more enjoyable. In other words realistice expectations. On another occasion I was following a mate in his Pajero onto the top end of Stockton Beach near Newcastle (Berubie beach - Spelling ?) in the 88 L series and he kept stopping in front of me cause he was expecting to have to pull me out at any second. He nearly did as I had not let the tyres down AND he kept stopping in front of me. Once on the beach I let the tyres down and the car floated back off the beach very easily.
My main problem now is the "Minister for fun and finance" who does not get my attraction with cars let along Subarus and why the hell I need 2 of them will always be an issues. Your car gives you pleasure and no one else so enjoy it and keep sticking Subarus abilites up their noses.

Good write up CLIFFr
My main problem now is the "Minister for fun and finance" who does not get my attraction
mmm. Thats why after 2 years of disagreement with my past defacto when she finally gave me the option "its either me or the trike". I left and began saving for the trike.

Dont know what it is with some people especially women who cant relate to us men wanting our toys and in the case of a "toy" being a means of transport eg useful.

I mean we dont argue about them buying and wearing makeup? Buying clothes more than they need to, attending "sales" which still means spending moeny???? "Toys", hobbies etc commeth with thy man. You dont like it lady? go for girls. I say this because I was an avid radio control model airplane designer, flyer and crasher. Cost a fair bit of money. So gave it up after so amny complaints from the ex girlfriend that earned half of what I did. Then trike not allowed. For two eyars I argued and was driven almost insane with boredom. Never again. Working on a vehicle, your pride and joy is therepudic, great fun, gives male bonding and keeps us sane.

Stand up to your rights and never apologise for being yourself....which includes your "fun". As long as you cana fford it.

Me 3 for the R/C planes. They spent more time in the ground than above it.
Started collecting R/C Wild Willy jeeps from the 80's with the first one from a garage sale up the road for $20 (with radio gear) and the 2nd one off ebay for way too much at nealy $200. Saved on the first one and crashed (there is a theme here isnt there) and burned on the next. As I say to the wife, I could be at the pub couldnt I.
What I do is plan work to be done on the car(s) so I dont spend all my time working on them. Everything in moderation.

Yeh, the excuse "I could be at the pub" never worked with my ex.

I spent 6 months once building a batplane. My own design it resembled a Hawker Harrier jump jet. But had two 4 stroke engines. It was unusual because I built it with swing back and forth wings. The mechanism was made with a continuous length quarter inch thread with two small electric motors one each end, one to turn one way the other to turn the other way. Looked great sitting on the runway with its wings going back and forth, took 30 seconds each way. Did it fly?

Figures were on board- batman as pilot and robin as a parachutist.

It flew for about 45 seconds, a tailplane broke off and out of control into mud.

Batman was decapitated. Robin was never found. It was the most tragic day in Euroa for plastic figures.

But I have a theory....that Robin got out alive and became the joker.....

This is why I still think staying with R/C stuff on the ground is my best option,
as force = mass x accelleration meaning gravity is not my friend.
The Batplane sounds awsome and Robin always seemed like a bit of a worry to me (still remember looking at the original Bat car at the Newcastle shown back in the 60's or early 70's - nice)
