What type of seal ???

Post by LongtimeAddict » Wed Aug 27, 2008 12:48 pm

Gday. I have an 89 EJ22 engine with an oil leak in the left (passenger side) rear camshaft seal. I want to replace it but not sure of what type of seal it is or how to get it out. The gregorys manual only mentions an o-ring but this is totally different. RHS has a metal cover but not the left :confused::confused: Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Tony

the seal is an O ring.

problem is - passenger side seal is inside the timing covers. you have to pull the front of the engine apart to get to it.

the drivers side is easy to get at - just remove the metal cover

Its actually leaking from what appears to be a rubber cover at the back of the head. surely I don't have to pull the head apart to replace it

Seen a few fixed by coating the area in sealant and letting set, pretty sure my rebuilt motor had this done during rebuilding as well as seals replaced.Or is it the cam cover seal?
