What Bennie said.
I've just completed an EJ18 conversion for $1562.83. That's using a second hand engine, loom and computer from a bloke on this forum, all other associated parts are new, and I did all the work myself except for some wiring. Some of the other guys here have done EJ22s for similar money.
Note in my first post i said do two EJ conversions, not get done. An EJ will work out cheaper and better than a recon EA81 if you can do a lot of the work yourself, and if you choose the donor motor carefully (look for a damaged vehicle or a private sale, don't go to the wreckers).
Up to you of course, but consider all the options before throwing down a stack of money on an engine that's probably 20 years old. Whatever you decide, there'll be plenty of advice available here.

Nah, mine's a naturally aspirated fuel injected SOHC 16v 1.8L out of a 1996 Impreza. It makes about 20% more power than the original engine. Turbos are much more powerful, and much more expensive.
And in response to your other post: I don't think MY stands for anything. It's just a model designation like Commodores have VL, VN, VT etc. But I'm sure others will happily correct me on this.
Your Brum probably has an EA81. Or if it looks like this:
, it's an EA82.

Brumby means EA81
dont bother with the EA81 if your planning on a conversion later on.
may aswell do something about it now if its needing a new motor.
BrennyV's Leone is a good buy and you culd put both the Motor and box into your Brumby if you know how. most things are already done for it jsut a few things different for an MY

-I bought an adapter plate to bolt the new engine up to the old gearbox. These are simple enough to make, but I'm not keen on metal fabrication so just paid the money for it.
-Stripped down the wiring loom myself (reducing it to just the functions required to run the engine). Some people pay a sparky to do this and get it right the first time.
-Redrilled the flywheel at a mate's workshop.
-Installed engine myself with a borrowed hoist, made hoses, wiring, cables, fuel pump etc fit.
-Couldn't get it to fire up, so dragged it off to a sparky who connected one extra wire and charged me $300.
-Still to be done: get the EJ exhaust header pipe joined up to the existing exhaust pipe (anticipating $50-$100 tops)
I've got a spreadsheet of everything I've spent on the car, and the total shown above is everything attributable to the conversion (yep, i'm that much of a nerd). There was a bit more than that spent on maintenance things like timing belt, water pump, plugs, seals, etc.
I work weekends at Repco in Kalgoorlie, so come and say hello if you're in the area. Brumby owners get good prices in my shop
