Lib internals into EA box
Lib internals into EA box
I have a 'spare' gen1 manual awd d/r lib box that had a very sad rear bearing on the upper gear set shaft, rather than rebuild it to its former glory I though it would fetch more coin in the frame of an L box.
I have yet to split the front section of the L box, so am yet to compare gearsets, but so far I cannot see how the lib centre diff could fit into the L extension housing,
however assuming the gearsets are interchangable, the lib extension housing appears to be able to bolt onto the L box.
This would require a modified tailshaft, gear linkages, and gearbox mounts, which is hardly a 'bolt on' option, but is doable (been there)
So an I on the right track? Can it be done this way? Is there a better way?
Any info would be great.

4.11 or 4.44 possibly, this particular specimen is 3.9 and my intention is to sell it as I now have an AWD ea82 box for the wagon, and an N/A lib box probably wont take well to the EJ20G that is only a meter away from the RX (so close yet so far)
How ever I have seen no mention of modding gb mounts etc on these 'spliced' boxs , so I was wondering if these details are glossed over or is there there such a thing as a direct bolt in ea82 box with lib internals?
I cant see the latter happening with the lib box I have however later model EJ boxes might differ, I have not had much liberty exposure.

Gearbox
I have done exactly as you describe. The gearset swaps over and the AWD extension bolts on the back. Needs a custom gearbox mount if fitting into an L series same as with any EJ conversion. You also need to weld in a small disc of alloy for the detent spring on the low range selector as the L box doesn't have one due to having the detent on the shaft in the extension. You will see what I mean when you split the case.
Gen 1 Legacy GT 3inch lift and 28's
Thank Ian, i see what you mean about the detent, not to hard to fix, reassembly should start shortly when i collect some fresh bearings n seals
Off at a slight tangent, is there a difference in the pinion gear between L 3.9 and 3.7 front diffs, are they ratio specific or is there enough allowance for the same pinion on both?
