No probs Drew.. I'm trying to make a parts list atm and before I go and buy all the stuff I'll let you know :)

By the way.. if anyone else of here in the west is interested in one of Chrisk's Spare Wheel Carrier setup, then give me your details and I'll try and buy all the materials at the same time. May be able to get some sort of group discount? Just a thought as I'm ready to buy/build asap.

That'd be cool, might get parts cheaper with multiples so I'm interested in that depending how much it ends up (I'm in a kind of poverty situation at the moment lol). I'd love to come have a look at it being built - easier for me to get my head around the specifics rather than working from just the photos and then have a go at knocking it up myself at home with my little Trans-Mig :) Drop me a PM when u ready.

Hey RSR -
What I did was get a heap of stuff precut when I ordered the steel in order to avoid a heap of cuttin with a hand grinder, resulting in crooked cuts and the like.

The 50x50 square box section for the swingarms and uprights were 450mmx2 (spare upright and 45degree brace) 150mmx2 (to hold the traingular plate for the wheel bolts off the upright) 550mmx2 for the swingarms (although I would get maybe 600 to make using the hole saw easier [this leaves room to still put a trailer on the towbar]) 200mmx2 (for the bottom of the main beam end sections)
2x 50mm lengths of 20mm solid rod for the securing pins.

Some of the other material used was a triangular piece of 5mm plate (the 2 short sides being 150mm) this was used to weld the high tensile bolts into drilled holes which then all support the spare wheel.
Re: the spare wheel holder assembly, call me and I will explain the exact alignments and what not, it's actually fairly straight forward, but easier said than written)

2 lengths of 2mm thick 50x20mm RHS for the uprights of the jerry holder. I used 280mm for mine, (but that may be different if you go down the folded sheet steel road ) 1x135mm (cut diagonally to make the bracing gussets for the base of the jerry holder)
One sheet of 2mm plate the size of the base of the holder (360x185mm).
I also used some 50x5mm plate in a couple of lengths(have to remeasure) for the vertical ends of the swingarms as wells as for the bent horizontal sections that hold the latches and the holes for the securing pins.

Those 8mm straps going to the tow bar mounts needed to be bent to align properly and a small section about 10mm was used to fill out the gap between the strap and the main beam. ( call me on this one as it's a little difficult to explain)

Some 50x2mm plate is handy as well in order to cap off the spare upright and to raise the latch hooks off the reo to a level where the latch (being mounted on the 5mm plate) will come in horizontally level, as these need to be aligned to actually funstion properly).
You might also need a bitt of plate to drop from the hook plate down to the 60mm RHS that the 20mm pins are welded to.

Looking back on it, the jerry can holder I should have made out of folded sheet steel with a slot cut out on one side so that a water jerry with a tap can be lowered in at an angle. therefore exposing the tap at the base and giving easy access to water without having to remove tha can.

Ok Chrisk, managed to get hold of the stubs/bearings and the flangeless hub items today. Then called around to my best friend's Steelworks so I could scrounged around all their off cuts. I think I've got enough now to start. I'll keep in touch and will upload pics along the way. Thanks heaps for your info today :)

RSR555 - I used 65x50 angle to mount the gas strut ball mounts on the beam and the 150mm of 50x5 plate for the parts that go over the securing pins. The verticals off the end of the swing arms that these were welded onto were 50x5 plate in 110mm lengths.
The straps at the bottom of the beam were 40x8 in 225mm.
Also, there was a 20x20 SHS in 400mm which I used to go between the top of the jerry can uprights (20x50) and this was notched to accommodate the bought jerry can holder.
The holder was then stitched at the top to the uprights and the 20x20 section.

i was thinking of using the hubs of the spare but now not such a good idea

Hehehe... I wouldn't try mounting a spare to the rear tailgate - the tailgate would not be able to hold the weight of the tyre when its open and if you tried to beef up the gas struts you'd probabily just twist the door.

On the floor in the rear cargo area there's a captive nut on the left hand side near the left wheel's mud guard - this spot is perfect and obviously designed to carry a spare in this spot. This is where my spare is until I get a rear wheel carrier sorted as well.

Cheers

Run a 9" grinder down the middle of the tailgate, bung some hinges on either side, get some smaller windows and a latch in the middle. Then you can stick your spare on it. Barn door (landcruiser style) conversion :)

I gotta come soon and check out the progress.

Was at Caningvale Markets Sunday morning to get our fruit and veg and spied one of those proper green metal 20L jerry cans forsale in the flea-market for $5. Thought "awesome I'll grab that on the way out". 15 mins later some other bugger had bought it! Anyone happen know how much these cost brand new? I don't wanna have to stick my budget yellow plastic one on the back of my car :)

RSR - Nope still can't see them.... :( Maybe it's something to do with the work connection here, it's a bit screwy sometimes in terms of allowed content. :/
Might try at home when I get a chance.
