Later model steering wheel on L Series

Is there any reason why a nicer, newer steering wheel from a later model Forester or Liberty wouldn't fit on an L Series? Would there be a boss kit or something available to do this?

Just seems better to get one from a wreckers than buy one of those heaps nobbly race car driver ones that are on the market, and you would get to keep the Subaru emblem.

Has anyone tried this before?

You can make an Impreza (I assume the Liberty is the same) wheel fit an L series by enlarging the hole at the back of the hub as the splines are the same size. You just need to enlarge the taper and add two roll pins (At 12 and 6 O'clock) so the self canceling of the indicators continues to function.

While it works OK it does mean the wheel sticks our further than the original and there is a slight gap between the wheel and the steering column shroud.

The best and simplest option is to find an early Liberty or Impreza steering wheel that came from the factory with a separate bolt on hub (There are both MOMO and Nardi wheels). In this case you need to buy a boss kit (IMO the SAAS one is the best) and it will be a direct fit for your L series.

Both the boss kits and steering wheels are easy to come by on eBay and there is a seller from New Zealand who regularly lists both the MOMO and Nardi at fairly reasonable prices (Not the $150 - $200 some people ask for!).

Another piece of advice... It is usually very easy to tell if the MOMO has a separate hub but not so easy for the Nardi from pictures. Make sure you know what you are getting!

As long as they aren't the airbag type and like sublime said "they are the bolt on type" then they will fit using a bosskit. I have fitted a few and they look sweet but unfortunately they don't have the Subie logo on them

i personnally prefer the race car ones but thats cause i race lol.
you can get some of them that you can mount a subaru logo too ive seen it done but not sure of the process

you get a cheapy key ring with subaru logo and pinch that if you really need the logo on your wheel. I managed to modify the AutotecnicA steering wheel boss (only listing for MY looks to be for tilt steer column not others hence the mod) got my Autotec wheel on and feels good on me Brumby. Sits wheel closer to driver than my SAAS wheel and boss, same diameter but gives better view of gauges.

The early Momo and nardi wheels will go straight on using the factory boss kit.

I know this is an old post but just to add some more info. I'm not a fan of the aftermarket rally ones or the MOMO or nardi ones for the simple reason, its not a race car.

I've got a 96 gen2 LX Liberty steering wheel on mine. Its not sporty but it comfortable and much better than original. I'll post pics soon.

But i am now looking to replace it to something else as it now has some wear on it or simply to a better condition gen2 Lib one.

And other suggestions? I too was thinking of the later Forester or outbacks? but most have air bags. What are the latest model that don't have airbags and would fit?

I think that nearly all 94 and newer Subaru's have and airbag in the steering wheel.

You could carefully remove it if you are have testicles made of steel

If the gas canister is not connected to it, then definitely not - its just a piece of material inside the wheel which cant inflate if no gas is connected.
