Yeah Dave, it does sound like the Cat is blocked. I'm awaiting a delivery from DHL today but after that I can come up. What time will you be home from work?
Brett has a good point about the timing as well. I'll bring up my OBDII tester and check your ECU system.

Paul you would be my best friend if you helped me diagnose this.
The car has more problems now to do with the axle but thats another story all together. Tomorrow after work i will be swapping the hubs from left to right... don't ask me why.
Im usually home by about 5:30 but my work doesn't exactly finish on time some days. Best would be to send me a SMS if your planing on coming up and i can let u know.
Im starting to lean more towards a timing problem too now. Driving it again tonight i nearly died pulling out infront of traffic when i put my foot down and the thing did not go. It doesn't seam to surge... just takes off slow like a 1981 Datson 200B Auto... actually maybe slower than that. Goes much better at half throttle.
Umm... boost guage is "T" peiced into some hose coming out of the manifold towards the front of the car.

oh ok thanks.
Could it be injectors? The Subi book says the MAF sensor is the most likely problem.
Although its not spitting any codes i have not run it in diagnostic mode to see if anything comes up. I should have time to do that on Saturday. I hope it spits a code.
If Paul can't help me do u think this is something Subaru will be able to diagnose with a computer???

Dave.. I'm sure Subaru would be able to find and sort out the issue but it will cost you. We can check over a bunch of stuff first. I can come up next week with some testing gear and go from there
Sorry that I can't come up this weekend

I have just read about your overheating prob's, I had the same thing in my Lib, first time it happend was when I towing the camper, on geting home I flushed out and replaced the coolent and was fine after that, then about a mounth later going out west to the inlaw's we have to over a range and it got hot again and that was without the camper, so i got a new radiator and have not had a problem since.
But have been wondering ever since taking out the old one that mybe it was ok, I found a lot of sand and leaves between the condencer and the radiator and I mean a lot of sand it took me a good 30 min to hose it all out.
I dont know if this is your problem but it mite be somthing to look at and wont cost you anything but time.
Dont give up on the Suby just yet my Lib has the 2.5 non turbo engine with an auto, when loaded up it must be about a ton and thats with the wife and three kids.
Rik.

maybe look into cleaning the MAF with some contact cleaner! could help the issue. could be a dud lead or mabye spark plug maybe!!??
when you pull out intp traffic is it breaking down like you have wet leads? could even be the coil pack/ignitor...
bryan
p.s rikstas car is the perfect example of why yours should be up to the task coz trst me ive seen how much stuff they load up and it doesnt even bother it!!

Make sure you get the contact cleaner that doesnt have silicon lubricant in it.

So self evaporating contact cleaner?? Stuff that says on the pack that it leaves no residue. I think i have some here. I will try that and see what happens.
Tried to pull codes last night but got nothing. It doesn't faulter like i wet lead does or miss fires... it just doensn't go when heavy loaded. Even with no load it seams not right off the line. Sometimes i feel i can feel a slight surge when i have my foot down.
Fuel filter has been replaced. Could it be injectors or should i still be playing with sensors... i got Paul coming next week hopfully with a computer gadget.

I have done some ground work... basically ruling out things.
I have found a vacume hose not conected. I have yet to find where it is meant to go to but the other end goes to a funny black unit bolted to the manifold. It is located on the passanger side. It seams to have one hose coming out of it but it may be tapped into the manifold too. The hose did lead under the manifold but i can't find where its meant to go.
There are 2 wires coming out of it... I unplugged it and started the car... It now has the engine light on even though i have plugged it back in. I can't find the Read Code Connector to check the codes only the Test Mode Connector.
No idea what this thing is but it must be important... it could be the problem.

Here is a link to it... sorry for the bad quality.... i had to take it with the camera pressed up against the fire wall (facing forward) and holding hoses out of the way.

You can just see where the clamp is and hose coming out of the top... this currently goes no where... It did disapear under the manifold where i spoted it... it has no vacume or pressure to it. The un-conected end shows no evidence of ever having a clamp on it.

To me it looks like the purge solenoid valve but hard to say for sure
