engine numbers

does anybody know how to decipher engine numbers to work out the make year of the engine? i've got an ej20 wrx engine in my brumby and i wouldn't mind finding out how old the motor is...

funny how if you have the original oil filler cap, the date underside of cap is age of engine.

yeah that would make it simple but unfortunately i dont have the original oil cap

Google the engine number and that should give you a fairly close indication of when and what it came out in!

That would be a slow progress finding out, if you could get the closest numbers if you knew what specific car it came out from, if you narrow down then you could find out what year etc... car yards would be a good start...
