I take a leaf out of mythbuster teams fantastic storage method - those clear 20 odd litre plastic boxes with lids at about six bucks each. When I get organised, things go into these in a sorted fashion.Get angry with junk everywhere it just gets piled into these until I am looking for it through opaque windows all around. They hold all grot within and well worth money spent. If I could have same shelving system and weldng stuff the mythbusters have...and the lathe and the budget....

well after much grumbling and looking while my children watch TV, I found the timing light right near all of my tools but I had put 3 boxes of assorted stuff on top of it. (luckily it is in a strong plastic case)
so I got the engine to temp and checked the timing (how tired were we when we timed the engine?) 10 degrees advanced Im thinking WTF so I made sure the vacuum advance was off and capped yep idle at 750-800 rpm yep 10 degrees advanced???
after much searching in my PDF collection and the WWW I find 10 degrees BTDC on a page for ej20 motors but that's with an ecu ok so look again in PDF and I find 20 degrees BTDC +/- 5 degrees so I set the timing at 15 degrees and what a struggle I eventually compromised and set it at about 11-12 degrees and what a difference it has made
so I'm putting everything back together I unplug the vacuum advance line and put it in place I hear a clink noise HMMM... not good take it of and put it on again to make sure same noise. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! too much vacuum so I find a place with way less vacuum and put it on.(no clunking noise)
I took PJ for a quick test drive 99% better still need to tune the carby a bit more and perhaps put the other 42 jet back in instead of having just one with the other drown-er(a 70 I think) but the engine is running so much better it is unbelievable.
cross fingers and hope it stays that way

That's odd as I can bet both my 2 that it was 13 deg BTDC and I know there isn't a measurement after about 10 deg ATDC on the EJs

I ask if the carb EJ looked like yours as in postion of carby in first place. That half spider like manifold does not look to me like it would support carby flow needs, but then again get the air fuel mix over the hump then dump it straght in ??? well it goes don't it?
As far as timing goes here you are another pioneer here making selected carby and dizzy work on normally efi EJ so you need to play and find own timing needs, and hell the escort dizzy characteristic were for a sort of powerless donk of the 70's too.
What may be helpful if you can get it would be a timing grapgh of an efi EJ to try to match, mark and swap dizzy advance springs....
I still smirking at your work..love it

well wifey permitting Im going to check the dizzy out tomorrow to make sure it is working properly. Im not going to pull it apart just a visual inspection and a light clean as I don't have anything to replace it with.
I went to a parts store today and found an adaptor plate that takes a holley 350 down to a weber manifold for just under 60 dollars, so I thought I would look around and find some ally and make one myself of course all these places are near the wreckers and I wanted to enquire about the price of a weber. In the end I was glad I dropped in, they had the same adaptor plate, a weber and an aircleaner all of which I ended up buying for 80 dollars.
so Im going to have a fiddle with the weber as well

Oh.. that looks like you've gone from 1 extreme to the other.. thats a 45 single barrel isn't it? I would have thought you'd use a 2 barrel 42/42

not sure of the butterfly measurements of the Weber but it is off and XE falcon and has been rebuilt recently note the little tag, unlike the car it came off which was unbolted cut into little bits and either sold or scrapped
these photos were taken at 9 am this morning before it was cleaned and mated to the adapter plate

the carby is now on the motor and all I need to do is make a linkage so the accelerator works for a carby that came off a 4.1 ford motor Ive not had to change a thing it revs like a mad axeman on a rampage I just hope it does the same thing under load ,not sure how I will put an air cleaner on as the carby is now way taller that the Holley ever was
the distributor is fine it was filthy inside (my fault) contact cleaner took care of that I even put heat shrink over the connectors to ensure they are not arcing out on each other I ended up setting the timing at 15 degrees BTDC because at 20 it had heaps of power but pinged (pinked) its head off
will finalize the linkages, work out the wiring for the electric choke ANY HELP HERE FROM SOMEONE WITH A WEBER ON THEIR CAR WOULD BE A BOON

and then post some pictures and video
(only 3 hours to make it fit and run really well I'm very happy just hope it stays that way

HAHAHAHA... Funny guy
That Weber off the 4.1 should be a 32/36 but not 100% sure. Looks in good nick and that tag is the factor ID tag from new. I'd prefer to make a new (like your manifold you have now) but with that Redline adaptor plate and maybe a lower intake tube model manifold.
As for that auto choke.. just find that EA81 manifold wiring that is lying just under your carby, find the 3 pin plug, find the blue wire (just check with your test light) and this should have 12+ve only when the engine is cranking/running, join this to the single bullet connector on the auto choke
Let me know how it turns out

Have you had a chance to look for that blue wire?

Get them to do it! I'm sure they know what blue looks likeTOONGA wrote:I would if I didn't have 3 kiddies to look after

That carbie looks like it was meant to be there! Have you ever seen an air filter/intake setup from a twin carb VW station wagon mk2 or mk3? That sort of idea could be the go if you've got any space between the bonnet and carbie - its basically like a flattened piece of pipe that directs air from an air filter where there's room to have one to the carbie that's in a tight spot... Maybe that'll work for you.
What ever you do don't be cutting a letter box into the bonnet - where's the fun in telling everyone that you've go something different under the bonnet?
Cheers
Bennie
