I love how the alternator sits in the middle
Good job mate:)
Yes it is one of a kind :) and something where we still have to explain to everyone that looks at it, why we made it carby/dizzy instead of EFI :???:

But as for the alternator.. it's still in the original position :p

yes it is fun explaining to people when you pull the bonnet

first glance..... EA81 with a custom manifold and weber carby

second glance..... EA82 with a modified spider manifold and weber carby

3rd..... WTF thats an EJ motor.... why did you do that?

then the chat begins :)

on a side note after driving home (150 km) at a good speed (not quite that fast but close, home in just over an hour from Kelmscott) I have used just over 1/4 of a tank of petrol :)

I would love to wire in a tachometer just to see what revs Im doing in 5th at hwy speed as it really doesnt sound like much :)

somewhere in my cavern of crap I have, I did think about it but then I thought if I was going to that much trouble to run wires I may as well put in a tacho

it is a pity the wreckers don't have one :)

Oh.. ok.. I thought you wanted one just a tempy one to see (was thinking just taping it to your windscreen) but if you're wanting it more permanent then yeah, look at Ebay :)

yes... yes it is and when it rings it is time for a new engine

I have found out that most 5 inch tachometers are around 40 - 1000 dollars

where as a 52mm one is just under 20 dollars

groan what a morning

I started the brumby just to make sure everything was ok ......

you know the saying "its times like these you need minties..."

the engine was a making noise like a herd of cats fighting a troop of monkeys ( in hindsight I wish I had videoed the engine while it was making this noise)

at first I thought the starter motor was stuck on (easy fix replace it)

then I worked out that it was coming from the drivers side head

oh $h!7 I thought WTF is that? and why is the engine idling way worse than normal?

I narrowed it down to the distributor (no the cap wasn't dancing around on its own)

so with a sinking feeling I stopped the engine and pulled the dizzy off (very easy)

as it came out of the engine I could hear bits moving

so out came the screwdrivers and needle nose pliers

when I got the dizzy apart one of the balance springs fell out on its own

Image

I then noticed the springs were not matched but completely different

black springs are from dizzy gold are replacement springs
Image

so much fun to put together (my camera on the phone killed the photo of the shaft rebuilt and Im not pulling the dizzy apart again in a hurry)

Image

now Im waiting for a break in the rain to put it back in PJ

what a morning

so....... you work inside when the missus is out at work - good to see you put newspaper down. Is that all it was 'just' a spring loose, did not scribe inside the housing?

no damage to the inside of the housing but it did remove alot of the caked on crap that was inside.

I always put paper down when I work on the kitchen top (and I never work inside when wifey is home) but note the chopping board, it needed a good scrubbing after the fun was over.

FYI,

All of the dizzy with centrifugal advance that I've ever seen have 2 different springs in them.

I'm not really sure what the intention of having them different is though.

I have no idea either and out of every distributor that Ive pulled apart over the last 25 years, this is the first one Ive ever found with uneven springs which I found rather interesting :) Even the gold springs that came out of the donor dizzy were the same length.

the different springs change the shape of the advance curve. As it is only pulling on one spring to start with, it advances quicker, until it gets to the point where the second spring comes into play. Different springs will change how fast it advances, and the length of the slots change total advance.

Point that makes complete sense, but on the flip side of the coin since I put in the equal springs I can set the timing to 10 degrees. where if I did that before the engine would ping madly and had to run the engine at around 6 degrees

And if they both drop out your subi will feel like a brick to drive. This happened to dad's rangie after an engine rebuild - we found the problem 2 years after it was rebuilt... After that it was like driving a sports car (for a rangie)!

yes Ive driven a car with broken springs and mashed balance weights the only fix was a new distributor. I can't mention the make for fears of a merciless bagging.
