Sounds like the symtoms of a head gasket but without seeing it first hand I'd hate to tell you so.

If it blows coolant out of the expansion tank then 90 percent its a headgasket issue.
If there is a crack in the head gasket between the water galleries and the cylinder, the pistons going up and down pressurise the cooling system and push the coolant out.

Hi mate,
Sounds like your car has a head gasket problem. Well you have two options, maybe three but the third is real expensive.
1, Buy a second hand engine, 300-600 depending on how good the engine is.
2, sell the car as is
or 3 rebuild the engine.
But get the car tested first if you can, buy RAC if you got it to make sure its the heads. but definately sounds like it.

well 69terra69 im ur man, i rebuild these subaru motors a lot.
Can i check it out for u? send me a PM and ill organise to have a look,
Firstly, did this just suddenly start happening, or did you buy the vehicle like this,
Secondly, is there any white smoke coming out of the exhaust after the car has warmed up for 2 minutes, but no more than 5 minutes?? (time between burn off of exhaust moisture and operating temperature)

hey guys thanks for the replys and sorry for the late reply
pretty much everyone i have talked to has told me head gasket so im sure it is so not willing to fix that engine at all because never liked the power so im thinking of 2 options.
1.buy a 2002 wrx engine with loom and ecu but whats steering me away is its front wheel drive.
2.sell the car completly and start again.
whats your thoughts guys ?

Convert your lib to AWD, its just a different set of hubs plus the rear diff and support bits that need to be bolted in, find an AWD gearbox, tailshaft and gearshift linkages and you should be sorted, the fuel tank may need to be swapped too, I'm not sure.69terra69 wrote:hey guys thanks for the replys and sorry for the late reply

If you think it easier you can start all over again with an AWD lib from the beginning... It will save you some time on a rear end conversion. Drop a second hand engine into your current ride and build up the new one

Sell it at buy Tristan's (90Brumby) already converted Liberty and you'll be happy. At 5k you wouldn't waste your time and efforts converting one

Depends on the variables - cost of parts, labour if you're paying someone to do it or if you're doing it yourself...69terra69 wrote:yeah what i was thinking mate cause i can get the rex engine for 800 so im thinking thats pretty cheap. whats rough price for awd conversion ?
Best way to go would be get a liberty with a dud gearbox or something that's wrong with it that you don't need for yours - like a rear ended one - get it cheap. Pull the rear end out and put it into yours with the matching gearbox. If the engine is good might as well drop that in rather than fix your current hot block in there.
From here look into the turbo conversion which leads onto:
Anything is possible. If no one can help you out here contact al at amauto.com about it as he'll know and would be able to cut down the two looms (you send them to him) and make one that works.69terra69 wrote:hey guys another quick question if i was to get the 02 wrx engine how much trouble is it goin to be to get the wrx loom to work in the lib ?
and will the lib auto box bolt straight up the the wrx motor ?
As for the auto - waste of time - where's the fun???
Cheers

i live in perth and would love to do ur rebuild for u for cases of beer.
I win at subaru rebuilds, and i jsut think theres no point spending money on new engines when its not actually that rediculous to rebuild.
costs are as folows
$700 bucks for gasket set (complete set with every gasket)
OR ~$400 for 2 head gaskets
plus coupla hunjy or so spare in case for posiibility of machining block and heads mating surface!
$200 for: oil, coolant, beers, and filters
