Nah it was running beautifully with a carb I rebuilt a while ago, plenty of pull and just felt fantastic. Then a main bearing failed after going up a long hill (not very steep though) So I ditched the whole engine+carby for a subareck one, and now I have the sluggishness etc...and leaky welch plugs...it never endsBrumby Kid wrote:i have only been half following your thread Sam, what happened? Sorry, Yeah i know it has been very tough for him, especially when you buy a whole new engine from someone reputable, and then you have all of these problems.
When rebuilding an engine, is there anything i should watch out for? I know you need to keep it all nice and clean, without contaminents, especially onced its ready to go back in.

check cam and crank for hair line fractures they can be trouble also overheated metals can be a twat down the track if not fixed other than that just try and keep it clean make sure the bearing journals are spotless before you fit the bearings/caps also when you tighten the bearings on either crank or cam make sure you turn it by hand before it goes back together... made that mistake on my first rebuild

Have a couple of ideas why it might have failed, told you one in that PM I sent. Can't be sure though because I didn't autopsy the engine, was just fed up with it by that point.
Before you start, buy about 3 boxes of glad snap lock bags, keep them and a sharpie handy. When you take any set of bolts out, gudgeon pins, springs etc put them in their own bag and label it exactly. Eg when you take #3 gudgeon pin out, put it in a bag labelled #3 pin. All of the flywheel to crankshaft bolts in one bag, labelled, all the lifters in seperate bags (#3 intake, #3 exhaust) etc etc
You will have a big pile of plastic by the end but it really helps when you come to put it back together. Increases your chances of not having any bolts left over at the end

Thanks Sam, thats a good idea. so take it apart, LABLE EVERYTHING, get new stuff, Bolts, Gaskets, Welch Plugs, get everything machined? and ask you guys for specs on how much it should be ground? Yeah simple except the getting it machined, or gound, what to get machined or ground and what specs to get it done by. AHH

BOO YEAH! The Inox worked a treat! (except i overfilled with water so i had to take some out. Perfect! Ran it for 20 mins. then every half hour im just turning it over for 5 secs and seeing if its still got a charge. Will be making those build threads soon.

Did see some coolant on the opisite side to the supposed head gasket so it may be a welch plug.
Where are the welch plugs? i know they're in the head but how do i get to them?
except for when they're stuffed, or if your rebuilding, do you need new gaskets?
