Fishing gear, did I get ripped off????

As most know I'm in Thailand (back next Sat) and passed a little fishing shop in Krabi about an hour ago so decided to get something hopefully better than the crap I have now.

I picked up 2 x 1m rods, 2 reels and some braided line, I'm not exactly good at looking after my gear so I didn't go overboard.

After I beat him down from 4,600 baht to 4,000 (trust me I can make them bleed but that was as low as he would go but this place isn't like the touristy places where they rip you off, everything was labeled)I got him to throw the second rod in free, they were only 150 b = $5 each but figured they might be handy for little sand whiting off the beach ???

Total cost at today's rate is $125.60

Small reel is a Shimano, larger with spare spool is a Diawa Regal 4000 XIA which matches my car lol and the braided line is 13kg rainbow coloured Jap brand.....rods unknown but flex well without breaking.

There is another shop here which specialses in hand held VHF's, might take a look later.

Cant comment on the rods but Daiwa & Shimano are the 2 best reel brands. Dunno those models. Braid is expensive esp Japanese. So i'd say you did well.

Some braid by itself is $80 for 300m!

Just make sure they're genuine not copies lol

I think it is it's but way up north, I heard a group of Chinese were killed there a few days ago, I'm near Phuket in the south and staying as it's so much cooler, like I said the rods were $5 each so I don't really care if they are binned but they have like a fiber rod going through the length of them so might be ok off a jetty, the reels hmmm, Shimano made in Malaysia and Diawa in Vietnam, not sure if under license or fake but they feel ok. the braided line looks pretty genuine but ??? it changes colour every 10m so that'll look pretty and it's 200m long 13ish Kg.

Shimano slade is a cheapish reel. As with the diawa. Plastic body.

You got away with paying the same you'd pay here for them. That braid is cheap and worth about $12 for 300m. I wouldn't be putting that braid onto those reels either. Its way to heavy and will smash them reels to pieces. 15lb max on them smaller reels.

I was watching river monsters. (sbs doco). I think they where somewhere near the mekong delta. They where catching stingrays, and those big catfish. Interesting, it took him about 2 hours per catch to get it from the bottom into the boat.

When I was in Thailand, I bought one of those little radio controlled helicopters, paid around $30AUS for it.

When I got home, I broke it so I looked on ebay for parts and found I could have bought one locally for the same.

Ah well, both body's are full alloy but looks like maybe I got K Mart specials, he had some pretty heavy duty overhead marlin type gear too but very very expensive.

Diawa Regal 4000 XIA is around 50 - 80 dollars on ebay, shimano slade 30 -80 dollars again on ebay, braid fishing line starts at 15 dollars per 100m on ebay as well. and a no name brand whiting rod between 20 -30 dollars on ebay. retail in Australia would be in the upper ebay prices if not more.

now all those prices are with out shipping and don't take into account ebays currency conversion (most were in America)

I think you got a good deal, Shimano and Diawa are 2 of the brands one of my nutter fisho mates swears by.

I myself use penn but thats because mr hockshop man had no idea of what he was selling.

as long as you don't try to land giant kelp monsters, your new fishing rods will be ideal for camping trips out of the Perth area

Oh well not so bad after all, I've got plenty of rods at home, just couldn't resist the little one and the second freebie after the price was agreed on. Just gotta hope they run on the same frequency and the prices are right, I'll go jump on my $5 a day scooter and see if he's open.
