Its located in the fuel tank , pull the rear seat up and look on RH side there is a oval shaped cover with 4 screws. It gives access to fuel tank.

Your lucky you don't have a 2004 model, they have a "Lifetime" filter....
You want to change the filter, you change the whole assy.

I have a 7/2001 MY02 Subaru Outback Station Wagon.

Due to the common oil leak from the drivers side rear head gasket, the heads were just serviced and timing belt, water pump, etc replaced. However, it is at times now sluggish, particularly at low revs and noticably when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear.

I purchased new plugs, air filter, fuel filter (Ryco Z348) and injector cleaner and managed to fit the plugs and air filter, but can't find the original fuel filter anywhere!

I searched the whole engine bay; near the tank; in the boot; behind back seat; under drivers and passenger's seats and the internet without success, aside from the above posts and some USA posts that were not helpful at all

Can anyone please tell me where the fuel filter is located on this model?

Thanks

Ed

Lift the rear passenger seat and under it, on the meta floor under the seat will be an oval access panel.

Under the access panel, you will find this

Then remove the electrical connector, the 3 hoses (make sure you mark which one goes where) and then remove the 8 nuts and lift up the fuel pump/sender assembly.

Once out, it will look like this (ignore the black external filter)

The metal cap must be unscrewed (a multigrip may be needed to get a grip) then remove the filter cartridge and install the new one, replace the metal cap and install back in fuel tank.
