help with cooling problem EJ22
help with cooling problem EJ22
hey guys, recently been having afew issues with my sisters ej22 gen1 gx lib.
it over-heated and slightly blew the headgasket. Ive chemi-welded it and fixed the headgasket problem. It was pushing all its water out of the overflow bottle. It has now ceased to do that.
BUT it still gets hot, but only when driving. Whilst idling its fine. The top radiator hose is getting hot like it should, but the radiator cap isnt heating up. What ive found weird is that it is holding pressure and when i pop the rad cap water explodes out, but its cold.
Thinking its possibly a shoddy thermostat and not opening like it should?
Ideas?
thanks guys.

After using Chem-i-weld make sure you flush out the radiator and heater core once the symptoms of a blown head gasket have gone. Then replace the thermostat with a new one and make sure you test it before installing it.

thought that might have been the case.
I think the thermostat was stuffed before I chemi-welded it as well.
Thoughts on going thermostat-less?
I ran my wagon with no thermostat for ages and didnt seem to have any ill-effects apart from taking 5000000hours to warm up
PS. She just bought a new bloody corolla and this car is becoming a spare 'shop runner' for my old man. Or we're going to sell it. Not sure yet, but its body is too good to ditch.
Pity its FWD, i would have like to AWD it and turbo it......hrmmmmmm

Yeah sound like the thermostat. Since you know the engine has been chemi-weld id run it with out the thermostat. Summer is coming and don't think it should affect it much
lol
I've got the rear cross member, arms and hub if you want, has been sitting in the weather, might need new bearings and machined disk's, $50Alex wrote:

I'd never run it without the thermostat but if you want to, just cut the spring section out and fit the restrictor section back in. This will do 2 things, 1. hold the rubber gasket in place and 2. reduce the water flow through the radiator, to allow the coolant time to cool down.
