A little treat for Brumby lovers

That's an old pic, the engine is in pieces at the moment. I'm swimming in twin carbs and manifolds, one of which was fully rebuilt and never put on a car, so maybe we might not have to rebuild those twin carbs. Or maybe the person who's rebuilding my engine won't let me do that...lol.

Ooh... I wouldn't mind a set of stock twin carbs for Sunnie the Brumby rather than a stock replacement carb or weber conversion.

So the alternator belt decided to snap at 1:30am this morning and damage the power steering belt while it was at it...car got abandoned on the north side of Brisbane. Currently driving a VW Golf GTD which is VERY nice indeed...hmmm...

Hahaha I thought that little comment would stir a certain few people

I managed not to overheat it - I pulled over straight away, inspected the aftermath and locked up and called a cab. Normally I would have been able to limp it home as I have an oversize battery, but not with headlights on.

My Brumby knows that I love it dearly however it also knows that I am starting to get a little tired of the EA81 having issues...

but i know what you mean after going from my brumby to my 04 forester i sometimes wonder if i can go back

What sort of issues? Fix them up and she'll be apples for a long time to come with the right maintenance.

Much easier than an EJ conversion IMO!

Age-related problems with seals and low kms mainly. Latest problem is coolant leaking out of the water pump and major cold start issues pertaining to (I think) vacuum leaks that are going on in the carby.

Yeah I'm going through the cooling system on Sunnie at the moment - I reckon it's all factory gear now with 347k km on the clock. I'm glad I've got on to it before it became a real issue!

If I move to New South Wales, what headaches am I likely to encounter with registration for this car? It'll need an engineer's certificate, right? It has a crapload of modifications such as twin carby engine, rear disc brakes, exhaust, PS/AC and more.

Dunno, call the RTA. But I doubt you'd have any, they wouldn't know it wasn't factory - even then it was from the factory and not an aftermarket accessory.

I reckon you'll be fine.

Hi all,

Apologies for being a little silent lately due to various commitments. Just on to post a quick update for my Brumby project.

Attached is a photo of the finished engine going into my car - JDM factory EA81S with dual port heads and twin Hitachi carburettors. The engine is in and has been to the exhaust shop for extractors and a replacement muffler. Tomorrow will be a day to work out the plumbing around the carbies - and if I'm lucky - "start day"!

I owe a major thanks to a friend of mine on this forum (not sure if he wants to be shouted out or not) for rebuilding the engine for me.

I'd like to find a twin carb engine, overhaul it and fit it to the vehicle to preserve low milage of the current EA81 (not even 40 000km...for the moment). If I cannot find one soon then the current EA81 will be doing a LOT of driving. I already have some twin carbs but I'd like the matching engine as well. As a student I can't afford too much but here's hoping that something might work out. DONE

Replace exhaust system with 2 1/4 inch cat back, possibly from the block if I find a twin carb engine. DONE

Fit rear discs DONE

Upgrade lighting - L series interior light, relays for headlights, replace headlights with semi sealed beams. Maybe fit some spotties.

Fit power steer DONE

Find 4 wheel caps buying new if possible DONE

Install electronic rust prevention

Maybe some audio improvements DONE

Work on the body some more - I'd like to find some mudflaps (both front and rear) in good condition, passenger door trim, etc.

Look after it and drive it IN PROGRESS

After this point I have decided that I have spent enough money on the car and it is time to look after it and enjoy driving it. The only remaining thing to do is to re-seal the air conditioning compressor and re-gas - anybody have a place they recommend in Sydney?
