The car isn't built for that kind of power, have fun twisting the doors off the thing!fantapants wrote:motor will be built to at least 350hp, so 350hp in a 980kg car thats rwd, you do the math

pffft - couple of engine mounts and a gearbox crossmember - knock that up in an hour or two.Silverbullet wrote:The car isn't built for that kind of power, have fun twisting the doors off the thing! Also, I have no idea what an SR20 looks like or the gearbox/diff you plan to use, but I can bet absolutely none of it will fit without serious mods to mounting points etc. A big task that's for sure.
Good luck.
I reckon its a bloody good sensible choice of engine swap. Just a pity you have to lose the AWD.
And if the car won't handle 350hp whats mine going to be like with 500hp out of the turbo rotary ??

Stick an RB30 in it. Shaved head, cam etc.
If your really keen, stick an RB25 head on it, and or run it on dedicated gas.
Cheers Cam

What would be the max power you could get out of an EJ25 with the boost turned up, bigger turbo, air intake, 3" exhaust plus chip? I would have thought 350hp is easily attainable...niterida wrote: And certainly not if he wants 350hp

Attainable but not easily or reliably and certainly not cheaply.
As much as I am a Subaru fan it pains me to say it but the EJ motors are not that good if you are chasing HP.......................
You could probably get 350hp out of an SR20 just by putting on a bigger turbo and upping the boost.
EJ needs cams, forged pistons and rods, possibly head work etc etc

i have been considering a sr20 for my rx, when i get around to it.
just not sure about the height of it though, will the hood fit...... dont know :P
nissan stuff is dead cheap compaired to subaru. ive wired both engines using standard ecus and the nissan wiring is so simple. it could be done in 10 minutes

Yeah well its like this - please sit back and enjoy this thread steal .........1111giles wrote:Thought you had dropped that idea ?
basically I had dropped the idea but then I bought a hatchback Torana in need of a full rebuild. Now as much as I love old muscle cars I love modern handling and performance even better. So I set about trying to find a decent IRS to put under the hatch, with the matching front suspension as well. On the Torana forum a few people had tried this before with Commodore setups but they just don't fit. So I was looking at Jap options and found one that looks like it may be a perfect match for the rear of the car - a 1992 onwards RX7. Now the beauty of this is that it is double wishbones front and rear - the Torana is already double wishbones on the front - bonus. Even better is the front suspension will fit even better than the rear and the track is just about the same as the widetrack Torana A9X option.
So now I am spewing because I had just sold all my RX7 front suspension bits from the ill fated front cut I had

So I price up buying front and rear suspension from an RX7 separatley - gonna cost over $1500, and then I still need to fabricate front chassis mounts and crossmember mounts.
Or I could buy another halfcut and get the front chassis rails that I can use and re-visit sticking the rotary in the Brumby.
So now I'm thinking I have my RS Liberty wagon as a day-to-day car and will have the Torana as the cruiser/RWD fun car for 'Sunday' drives. That leaves me more options to turn the Brumby into a more track oriented car and not worry so much about making it look 'factory'.
So I have been toying with the idea of moving the WRX floor pan back 50mm (its not welded in yet), running the CVs on an angle and giving me 50mm more room for the rotary (or even the EJ if I stay with a Subie). But then I also thought since I am widebodying it to fit the WRX running gear and running a 4 point roll cage in the tray then I could easily run rear mounted radiator, either in the tray or maybe 2 in the guards on each side.
A lot depends on whether I can find a suitably priced half cut, rolling chassis, or separate front and rear suspensions from an RX7 by the time I am ready for either an engine or the suspension. I actually just missed out on a complete car for $4500 - by the time I had rung him (less than 12hrs after the ad came out) it was sold

Although I already have everything here (except exhaust manifold and wiring loom) to build a turbo EJ motor so I am heading down that way as a priority plan, and can always change to rotary later.
Now back to the original thread............

The thing I'm waiting to see is the OMG look when they sit the flat 4 motor with box attached next to the inline 4,6,v8 with box attached. Bonnet clearance is not really the issue.
Those who've had a good look under the bonnet to see where everything sits will understand what I'm talking about.
I know someone who fitted a Toyota 1JZ-GTE into a Liberty wagon. There was no way it would ever, or could ever, be gotten signed off as legal.
