New Car City! RX Turbo

In recent weeks, our Landbruiser was discovered to have a couple of cracks in the head :( As a direct result, my dad decided he wanted to take my sexy Brumby (can't blame him)

Anyways, I refused to give it to him unless he got me another car. Lo and behold, Subibaja rocks up with his RX Turbo (EJ22 conversion) and so after a look/drive, we took it. No doubt some of you have already seen it in his thread.

For the princely sum of $1100, we got an '85 RX Turbo with a late 90's EJ22 conversion, already had the stock dual range 5sp and LSD, lifted 2" with 27"/8.5" Nankang AT's on it. As well as an '85 Leone in "working" order for parts (kind of).

Now, it does have a bit of rust here and there, and things need doing, it still needs a few things for roadworthy, but I'm getting there.

Today I:
Tore the interior all out and started detailing (found 65 cents, WEEW!)
Replaced both of the front engine mounts as they were both pretty shagged, was rumbling and rocking something fierce
Degreased the engine bay and cleaned out the air filter and had a general clean up

Tomorrow morning before work, should be:
Finishing interior
Changing all fluids and filters
Checking all the brake pads
Repacking the rear passenger CV, sounding very dry and metallic, can hear the scratching/squealing

And in the next few weeks I should be:
Cutting/sanding back rust (few patches) and bogging/respraying
Changing fuel pump
Swapping out cracked windscreen
Reattaching and possibly replacing internal heater gear

Fairly big list, but it's not too bad, keen to get it all going.
Engine conversion and all the hard stuff's already done so I'm not complaining :D

Let me be the first to congratulate and commiserate.

That's a fantastic looking bit of kit however. Great deal too.

Yeah it was cheap is chips, rust around the windscreen is a bit concerning, but it seems pretty minor at the moment. Must get onto it soon though.

Someone once wrote a book called Up the Parramatta Road - about Sydneys used car sales yards. One story was about a guy who sold an old Jag for way too much and his boss made him give some money back to the buyer so not tarnish their rep. I think you should be paying a bit more to the seller - think you robbed him :D Welcome to the club of Brumby and a turbo L sedan ownership :) even if it ain't turbo no more inside - same torque in EJ22

Yeah, he said "1100 firm" in the thread and I think he just needed to get rid of it, no time to wreck :( plus it needs a bit to be roadworthy. But still, it's a bit of a steal ;)

I had read on here somewhere that the torque is pretty much the same.

She fairly flies! I took all the seats out to start the detailing and took her for a strap up the road and my lord I couldn't stop smiling and giggling like a little school girl. Pretty big step up from the worn old EA81 :p

the NA EJ22 has 2 variants

EJ221 Naturally Aspirated

the difference being the EJ22 is a way better motor :)

I don't have any of these specs for the EJ since he only had the original EA82 manual.

Any visual way to tell which variant the engine is? Would be handy to know.

Also on what year it is?

Well, one way is if it still has the EJ's original oil cap - the underside has a year of its manufacture and some have used that to decide its age. EA's had similar markings in its block casting - maybe continues with EJ ?

No torque figures for EA82T Jules ?

Oz EA82T '85'86 models had 113HP @4800 134ftlbs @2800, overseas models were 136HP @ 5,600, 145 ftlbs @ 3,600

EJ22 smokes an EA82t. I know this first hand. Matt(subafury) had a fairly modified EA82t in his wagon when I was running a Ej22. Not only was it quicker down the quarter, it was also a bazillion times better off road.

That's a good looking RX for sure, I like the chequered seats on those. Well done getting that, it's a bit of a step up in performance.

It seems like it would be good off-road just punting her around down the back today. Lots of go in the low end, first just roars along nicely ;)

My mates got himself convinced he's gonna smoke me in his 1.5L '03 Lancer :roll:

Yeah I'm liking the interior :D looking a bit sad at the moment since the only thing left in there is the driver's seat.

The change in performance is kind of remarkable compared to the Brumby, even with the Brumby's K&N and 2.25" sports system the RX still hammers it. Do need to replace the fuel pump soon though, making a lot of noise and it's getting a bit jumpy :(

Sweet buy mate! I'm seriously jealous, it was a wicked buy...The EJ22 is definately the go'er. They go pretty hard in an L-Series for a small 4 cylinder motor.

Yeah the boxer's put out way more power than they should for a 4-cylinder with that displacement.

I'm finding that the fuel pump issue is getting worse :( it's making a LOT of noise now, and I'm starting to think there's an issue with the O2 sensor as well. As I'm driving I hit little flat spots of acceleration. It isn't a constant issue but if I give her a bit of juice (over 3500RPM) it tends to happen more often :(

Any ideas?

A stock ej22 is around 60hp per liter of engine capacity. By no means a high performance engine. The engine in a Toyota ae86 for example is around 75hp per liter.

Hmmm, I suppose the power to weight ratio would play a big part. I also think the Hachi Roku had a bit more put into it's development as a 'performance' engine than the EJ. Subaru have tended to mostly build hard-ass cars that can drive almost any speed on almost any surface.

I don't think flat out performance was ever the goal.

PS. Made myself a list of what needs doing/what I'd like to do today. Getting longer :(

Fella's, you missed my point. As an engine, the EJ22 isnt really a high performance engine, only producing around 60hp per liter of engine capacity. My KX250 produces around 40hp from 250cc, that's 160hp per L (an EJ22 of simillar performance would have 350bhp)! My brothers XR6turbo is around 100hp per liter. However, Im getting ahead of my self now as those engines are high performance motors, where the EJ was never meant to be a high performance engine.

I guess what Im trying to say is some of those little iron block straight 4 engines made by companys like toyota and nissan are "better bang for capacity" then the subie engines.

Sorry for the rant, it certainly is a sweet looking beast you got their!
