Vapor separator, what does this thing do???

Post by Silverbullet » Sun Apr 07, 2013 6:02 pm

Apart from separate vapor (which I don't think it does very well) The ute has what I first thought was a fuel filter up next to the wiper motor. Fuel in, fuel out (to carbie) and a paper element inside. The wagon had a filter there but the ute one is different; there is a smaller hose that comes from the top of this thing and follows the fuel line to the carbie, before going into it it at a right angle through a join soldered onto the main fuel line. Before the engine swap this thing was full of fuel but not brimmed, always an air gap at the top. After the swap it is always completely chockers with little or no air at all. Disconnecting the top hose at the carb end sees fuel dribble out until you block it off again.

The ute has a different fuel and breather system to the wagon which this engine doesn't have provisions for, should I be worried about anything? I noticed today when I opened the fuel filler cap after a 15 minute drive (with engine running) there was a hiss of air, couldn't tell if it was sucking in or blowing out though.
Will it ever end!?

Just treat it as the front fuel filter that has an extra pipe, and leave it alone if it ain't broke. Might cause grief if you try to convert from one system to the other. Your bullets fuel pump up front near the wiper motor and Brumbys way out the back ? Another difference
