EJ22 in L series sump mods
EJ22 in L series sump mods
Has anybody modified or fitted a different sump to an EJ22 when it fitted in an L series, as it hangs down a long way.
I have a few dead EJ22 motors and was thinking about doing some mods to increase the clearance.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've wanted to cut down my sump to increase the clearance under it so the bash plate can sit higher. I also want to angle the front edge for a little be of extra clearance on the approach angle.
I might get there some day, it's not an issue at the moment so I've not bothered, plus it means engine out and down time on the car
Getting the oil pick up and the baffling correct would be the tricky bit I reckon.
Cheers

Bugger me - that fella LIVES out of his vanTOONGA wrote:look at the vanagon sites for information on this, as these guys have to cut the sump down for clearance issues.
heres one
about half way down that page
No real details, but here's his images I've "borrowed on a permanent basis":
Cast aluminium sump:
Smaller pick up pipe can be seen on the engine:

Also, this thread answers my oil pump question If it's reliable!
I got stuck reading what he got up to, didn't get to the end as I should be in bed... but he knows his stuff about these vehicles - even imported a an audi (I think) alpine gearbox or something, flipped the diff, made a bell-housing adaptor plate (bell housing to gearbox) to mate up the subaru EJ22... Then suspension stuff started and I phased out on that thread.* 93 - 96 SUBARU IMPREZA 1.8L SOHC

I wonder where these sumps could be found - my issue would be oil starvation when on extreme angles left or right...

The sump looks great, found out some info about them, they will not fit with Subaru engine mounts, designed to fit VW mounting system.

I have a dead ej22 (need an oil pump Bennie? 360,000km!!), that once I get the EA82 off the engine stand I was going to investigate some custom cutting and welding.
Just looking for Ideas.

Really??steptoe wrote:aha ! Another reason not to EJ (says the man who is yet to drive an EJ in an MY or L )
The only reason we're talking about this is for more ground clearance. It's not necessary for a daily runner/road goer. Actually it's not really necessary unless you're trying to gain a little more for potentially a lot of work...

I should look into this again and have something ready for the next time the engine is out. I've got a spare sump on an engine I'm not using at the moment, it shouldn't be hard to dummy it up and go from there.
Anyone know if there's a science to it as I would like to keep a good oil capacity and not have the pump starve while offroading...
