Help:Impreza C'Z or nonturbo mod's to keep up with traffic

Hi, hoping to get some tips on this site or some DIY pics.
Bought myself an impreza c'z, thats 1.5L engine. its real crap on performace but i got it coz was cheap and i like subaru's. Luv the noise. The muffler on the c'z is tiny as, probly 1inch or less. Gona put on a slightly bigger muffler, not too big, something that will make it look nice 2.5" bigbore. reckin it will make that subaru noise? im not after a big loud noise, with the stock u dont hear a thing, its quite silent, so wont mind a little bit more noise.

The impreza 1.5 is guuutless. I put my foot down and it takes awhile for it to get the revs up. I dont want to race or anything, im just scared i'll get rear ended by cars when i leave an intersection. I think the problem may be because it might be SOHC? Thinking of putting a really good high flow airfilter, podfilter or those spoungy mushroom looking ones. But dunno where to put it. I mean the air intake is placed in a different area than the turbo engine subbies. My air filter is located where the intercooler would be in a turbo subaru. its a box with a plastic pipe that goes to the front of the bonnet to collect air. Has anyone out there got a non turbo subaru and put on a podfilter ? can u show me a picure of where you put the podfilter?
N e tips on how to put more power into my 1.5 impreza? I just want enough to get a better take off.

I can't see anyway to get a significan't power increase from it with out replacing the engine, although a 2.5" would be far too big, would give you even less power, I'd recommend no bigger than a 2" exhaust, I have an exhaust system from an 1.8L impreza you're welcome to try, I'm in robertson.

Also I wouldn't go to the extent of a pod filter, a replacement K&N panel filter would be easier and just as effective.

These will make it a bit more responsive and give you a little more power but you still won't be breaking any land speed records.

1.5L Imprezas are meant to be gutless.

If it were me I'd be saving the money for an engine swap. If you want to stick with the engine you've got, there's not a lot that can be done easily to improve the performance.
Contrary to what the rice magazines say, an exhaust and a pod filter won't get you far. I've had several friends with gutless cars perform these mods and guess what? They still have gutless cars, albeit with a heap of induction noise and a tinny exhaust note.

That Subaru noise you refer to (aka boxer rumble) is pretty much all due to the headers being an un-even length. Depending on what exhaust headers you have you may or may not get a rumble. There's a Liberty driving around near me that sounds like a Civic.

Does this mean that it is a carby EJ15????

You're probably not going to like this answer, but my suggestion is to do nothing to it. Anything like this is only going to gain you maybe 3 or 4kW tops.
Save your money for spending on your next better car, you'll just be throwing money away on this one unless the parts are transferable to another Subaru you buy later.
For the moment, relish the good fuel economy you'll be getting.

Stock early liberty exhaust is 2" so you make be able to get one of those from the wrecker's for cheap. Should be pretty much identical upto the rear suspension (where'll you have to get it cut to shorten it to match the Impreza's shorter wheelbase).

BTW, I've never heard of a 1.5L Impreza. 1.6 EJ16 was the smallest I've ever heard of (certainly in an Australian delivered model)

yeah i dont think there'd be a car like mine in australia. My car's in New Zealand. Dunno what type of engine is it.. think its a EJ15.. carby, fuel injected.. no idea.. its a 1998 model. The car cost me NZ$5000 and done 53000km, dunno if its tamperd, the odo is digital, from a dealer.
Seen alot of libertys here, we dont get those in NZ but we got ones that look the same calld Legacy.

In fact, everywhere but Australia it's called a Legacy.
We have a non-profit organisation called Legacy here (not sure exactly what it does, but I think it's something to do with returned soldiers). Anyway, when Subaru was first going to bring the Legacy here, there was some deal done that it wasn't to be called that, so was born the Liberty.

It you want to know what engine is in there, look at the built plate in the engine bay (I think its on the firewall) & look for an engine code.
It should be EJxx (the xx being 2 digits). put a decimal point between the 2 digits & you have the capacity in litres.

Due to modesty I cant show you a picture of where you should put the pod filter, but if you touch your toes and look backwards and upwards it should give you a fair idea.

Use quality lubricants only.
