ok i have question too. if i buy a ~91 gen 1 liberty as a donor car will the brakes work with the kit? From looking at the DBA listings they are 260mm front disks, not the 277mm that are recommended with the kit.

Yes they should, however I should check what car you're putting it in. Gee

90 Brumby, and it will have the L control arms too. so I guess that means all of the knuckles are either the same or interchangeable. I'd upgrade the front brakes to the 4spots later on.

It'll be fine. Everything will fit. Brumby's don't have a proportioning valve on the rear circuit but the twin piston set up works fine without one. If you find the rears are locking early with the single piston front set up (I doubt this will be the case) you may have to get some twin piston calipers.

i just got a set of the CB control arms on my 79 brat... perfect fit! i'm very happy with the results...

i only got control arms and the brake booster stuff for my conversion... reason being, i'm cheap(excessively so), and have access to xt-6 parts which should serve the same purpose...

passenger side... (YES passenger side... go LHD!)

Image

drivers side...

Image

mounted along with modified stabalizer bar...

Image

note that for the gen 1's the stabalizer bar is welded to the control arm... i was going to make some custom ones but once again, i'm cheap so i cut off the old ones and bolted them on... (not welded because i didn't wanna ruin the pretty powdercoat)

also note that the gen1 stabalizer bars are much longer than then gen2's making the stock gen2 bars impossible to use without extending them...

wheel and rusty rotor on...

Image

and the stance...

Image

please note that i do not have proper camber bolts and strut bolts on... along with that, i don't have a motor or anything in it... so the camber is really messed up...

i also need to shorten my axles...

the clearance for the strut is crazy tight... to tight for me... right now i have KYB dirtRA struts and springs on... these are just for fitment... i will be getting a set of hotbits coilovers in about a week so that problem will be solved with the small spring diameter...

Image

with a little bit of creativity this kit works for the gen1's!!! (the front anyways...) ;)

Hi Gee , I spent most of this afternoon at Pick and Payless and ratted up :

1) Early Lib uprights/discs/calipers . The ones I got are not two piston calipers
but single - possibly the 260mm disc type .

2) Two L series lower control arms .

3) Two L series compression (caster) rods .

4) One 4 outlet type Nabco 1" BMC .

I wish they'd had some two piston front brakes but at least I have the option to run 14" wheels if need be .
I could not remember if 2WD Lib rears/backing plates were suitable so held off there . Next time I'll get those and the cables and mounting hardware up to the lever itself .
These twin piston front brakes and vented rears , are they only on RS Turbo Libs ?

I'm going to need your kit next and wheels to suit , I have seen a set of 5 15x6 Lib alloys (55 offset from memory) and acceptable 195/60 rubber for a little over 300 - nice and light too .

My suspension expert is looking into Bilstein coil overs for the front and either Whitline or Eibach small diametre coils . Coil overs for Rexes should be very close if not correct dimensionally as length and travel are important . Setting the spring rate should be interesting and the dampers will suit the spring rate .

The rear will probably also be a coil over because the damper body is fairly short in relation to the piston/rod .

As soon as I have the backing plates I'll send them and the control arms down from Sydney .

One last question , are the Lib backing plates for vented and non vented rear brakes the same ? I ask because if so I can grab them and hunt for the discs/calipers later .

Cheers Adrian .

Twin piston calipers are from RS's and later model libs. I think maybe RX's and later. Then you have your early foresters, outbacks and WRX's. The rear vented rotors are from an RS. Not sure about WRX's as I have heard alot of things depending if its wagon and what year. But I think from mem 99-00 got vented rears standard with the single piston calipers.

I got my vented rears with single piston calipers from an import wrecker. They are standard on gen 1 Legacy gts' and lots of other jdm stuff.
Try EKW in Melbourne. Ask for Lou.
The Gen 1 disk brake backing plates are the same for 2wd, 4wd, vented and non vented, make sure you get all the handbrake components. ie shoes, springs, cables, cable clips and they cable stay bracket on the floor behind the centre console.
WRX coil overs are perfect for what you are after and many brands available.
I have had a chat with the Vic. Koni distributor down here (a while ago) and they can supply a coilover that will work. I have no idea on part numbers any more but I get the impression they are a generic motorspot coil over that happens to suit. I didn't ask for a L series coil over, I asked for an adjustable coilover with x length and x diameter coil.

For the record does the the std Liberty/Legacy strut/spring/top put an L series at somewhere near its std ride height ?

I haven't tried but it would be close if not slightly higher.

Sorry , a few more questions .

I would have had the Lib backplates and cables today except I could not get the rear hub nuts off (recessed) . Can someone tell me the nut size so I can buy the correct socket to remove them . Also guesses nearside LH thread and offside RH thread on the stub axles .

Magnas , saw about 40 of them but could not identify an LH type . Can someone give me the year model (or any significant features) of the ones that donate their handbrake assembly to the L series conversion please .

Rather than waffle here about the suspension development path will use another thread .

Control arms and backplates on the way when I get the plates , cheers A .

I use a 1 1/4 which is equivalent to about 32mm (the 32mm is a bit sloppy). Threads are all the same no difference between left and right hand shafts.

The Magna is the TN which is the early 'wedge' shaped one.

Hope this helps

If i'm using a lift will i be able to get away with liberty struts in my brumby or will i still have to buy forester/impreza/coil overs?
it will be gen 1 liberty struts and a 3 maybe 4" lift

Update . Now have the early Lib rear 2wd backplates/brakes/handbrake cables/the two pressed plates that support the cables inside the Lib and TN Magna handbrake assembly . The only bit I forgot is the piece that all the drum shaped cable anchors fit into behind the handle . Liberty or Magna ?

Plates and arms on the way next week .

Cheers A .

Liberty struts will be fine with 3 or 4" lift kit. The springs and upper spring seats won't hit the insides of the towers once the lift blocks are on top of them. I think Outback and maybe Forester struts will allow a bigger tyre because the distance to the bottom of the spring seat from the centre of the wheel is greater than on Liberty and Impressa struts. ie. the Spring Seat sits higher on the strut leg. Perhaps someone else on the forum could verify this.

Ok cool so it looks like i wont be able to use the liberty struts anyway, ill just have to plan forester struts, springs and strut tops into the equasion,
