You've got an exhaust leak somewhere... the popping your hearing is un-burnt fuel in the exhaust on engine braking, this sucks air into the exhaust from the outside atmosphere allowing more oxygen to mix and create an explosion in the exhaust pipe. Find the leak and fix it, problem solved. Easier said than done sometimes though.

It only has to be a small hole...

Don’t think i agree with you on that one mate, think we really need to know what engine/setup he is running before we can draw any conclusions.

My sti pops and claps trying to tell me that i have a leak? :P

My EA81dc done it under heavy engine braking, and so does my EJ22 (on same exhaust, only the 22 has a Cat.)
I kinda like it, eheh.

Through the pipe rich through the carb lean. You could also have an issue with your anit back fire valve. Its the thing on the LH side of the engine bay that looks like a small dumbell standing up. It could be black plastic or made of alloy
