98 Liberty Motor in a 98 Impreza?

Post by Greenman » Tue Nov 20, 2007 11:34 am

The 2.0 Engine in my 98 Impreza is dead, I've been looking around and found a 2.2 Liberty Engine of the same year.

Just looking for some advice as to whether it is possible to put a liberty engine into an impreza, and if it is, what I need to check for or what other parts I may need to exchange to make it work.

Overheated in the middle of nowhere, used all the water I had, but the radiator wasn't being fed by the overflow tank, then radiator developed a hole (probably from putting water in it while boiling...) so it overheated some more, limped it as far as I could (which burnt all the oil out) and eventually got stuck and had to join RACV to get towed into nearest town. I totally killed the engine by driving it after it overheated the first time, but I was stuck in middle of nowhere...:(

I can get the computer from the EJ22 engine if I need to use that. Just want to know if there are likely to be any problems putting a 2.2litre liberty engine in the hole that the EJ20 2.0litre Impreza engine filled.

I found an EJ20 engine of the same year but the guy wants nearly three times as much as the guy with the EJ22. So If I can save a dollar and it isn't going to cause any problems I'm keen to use the EJ22.

The 2.2 will bolt into place.
Yes, that easily.
But, the wiring will probably be different, how different i can't say.
Best bet is to try to find wiring diagrams for both cars and compare before you buy it.
There are people that do much harder swaps than that that live on this forum, i'm sure they'll be more help!
Good luck, and remember, anything is Posible!

I'd imagine that the wiring looms could be significantly different (Aus model Impreza never had the 2.2 EJ). That said of course it' possible.

You may find the intakes and exhaust etc. may be in a different spot. Just something else to consider.

Has your Impreza got a two plug or a four plug ECU?
