Fuel Economy
Fuel Economy
Just wondering what sort of economy is standard from the EJ22. I have a 1990 Auto GX Wagon, and get roughly 400k's out of a tank. Is this pretty standard ? Cheers

What I was trying to get at is if you just say that you get X amount from a tank ,really dosn't mean that much as you may be simply going off the gauge and we all know how well and acrurate fuel gauges are.The best way is to actually say how many K's you got and then how many litres you had to put in the tank to fill it back up, I know at times my Liberty would show 300 k's on the trip meter and and the gauge telling me that the tank is empty, yet when i fill up it only takes 40 ltrs , and the capasity of the tank is actually 55 litres.
It would be a bit like saying that My old man used to get 1200 klm from a tank in his Maverick, sounds awsome ,
the thing is he had a 130 ltr tank in it
.
Bloody hell I go on at times.
Mike.

400 km from a full tank isnt that good, i had a gen 1 liberty wagon with a few mods done, that had the na ej22 and it was auto aswell but i could get 550 + in town and 600 + for highway driving! and im pretty hard on the loud pedal when i drive too.
ooh and my l series wagon atm im gettin 550 + and im using bp ultimate in that so i think u might have a bit of an consumption issue mate. cheers Ben

My 96 Liberty EJ22 FWD 5spd on Shell regular unleaded (91ron?) seems to get about 8.5L pretty consistently doing a mixture of city and highway driving. My normal driving style is to use the torque rather than the high end power, so I put my foot right down but shift usually around 2000-2500RPM. And keeping the momentum up really helps the fuel economy, ie get a small run up before the hill, don't shift till u get to the crest of the hill, once u drive a route, ie to work u get used to the road and know how much speed u can carry into corners etc. I noticed a good increase in economy, ie using less a few months back when shell advertised their fuels are designed to get u further on the same amount, they must have changed something and its working for me. The car now has just under 200K on the clock. back when we got it, it was is real good nick (70K) and used to get 600km to a 45L run (7.5L/H), now its about 500-550 (8.5L/H ish).
On the flip side my L w big wheels and a 3" lift, Webber gets about 12-13L/H, but its speedo is out by about 20km/H so would bring it back to somewhere around 10L/H. But booting it and also flooding the carby by holding ur foot down when the engine can't use it, like going up a big hill in too hight a gear can really suck the juice. That's one thing i really like about the EFI, it doesn't seem to eat the juice no matter how hard u mash the pedal, as long as u keep the revs down....

Yeah PeeJay in my experience though only with the EFI, doesn't seem to work for the carb, must be something to do with the ECU controlling how much fuel gets injected. Though its not an electric throttle, so not really sure why.PeeJay wrote:So driving with full engine load in low RPM is more efficient that low load in higher RPM?
What does everyone else think?
7.99L/H on an empty car, (full tank but just me and no gear), running fast and hard (under 4000RPM though) from one end of the Putty Rd and back, was about a 500km trip. Filled up before I left and when I got back. Efficiency surprised the hell outa me. Again I think its has to do with keeping the momentum rolling, and when u do have to grind it slowly up a hill just take ur time and don't push it past its limit.

Ive got a 92 liberty and you should be getting at least 525-550 out of a tank, the gauge will read very empty but you will get it, the tank should hold i think 60-65 litres but i don't think the transfer pump will pump all fuel from one side to the other, anything more than 10.5 litres per 100k's is not right, i put an aftermarket muffler on and got another 50km out of a tank
Don't forget the Lib is heavier & bigger than an L.
Though you should be getting better economy than that. 400km was kind of average for my auto Legacy GT wagon (though the first tank lasted only 200km after upgrading from an EA82T touring wagon

yes, same here: from filling up till the fuel nozzle clicks off and filling up again when the reserve light's coming on I get a maximum of around 40 L into my '99 Liberty wagon, auto. And the manual says it's got a 64L tank. I haven't driven it dry yet, but it's bothering me a bit having to fill up all the time. Where do the missing 25 L go (after all, it's more than a third of the nominal tank volume)???
BTW, I'm getting around 10L/100km city and 9L/100km HWY.

^Matt, maybe try turning the nozzle upside down or on its side when you fill the Lib up as I think it is known for the early Subes anyway that the nozzle clicks off early? I fill my 93 lib with the nozzle upside down, and it does work!
400ks is bad.
And I average about 450ks haha, I'm pretty heavy 'footed' tho

A lot depends on how you drive it too. I reset my fuel consumption computer during a track session at Winton a couple of weeks back (Not a Subie - but the comparo is valid) I got just under 10 litres / 100 km on cruise control down the Hume - and 35.5 litres / 100 km on the track - and I was being "gentle" to the car too - changing about 500 rpm shy of the limiter most of the time.
