My 99 Outback (2.5L/5sp manual) gets an average of 480km per tank (which I thought was 55L, but according to the manual is 64L), which works out to an average of 9.454km/L or 10.616L/100km. I get better economy on premium fuel, but it costs pretty much the same per km.
Looking at my spreadsheet thingy here, my fuel economy has been going down. Started out at 10.163km/L, and the last entry is 8.809km/L.
I think I'll have to start driving more sensibly... :P

You don't have to keep filling it up, it's not empty! The other 24L is still in there, it hasn't gone anywhere. The reserve on most Subaru models is usually between 10-25% of a full tank capacity, ie, when the gauge shows empty, there is a reserve capacity left (so you don't run out of fuel). This can mean there are potentially hundreds of km of mileage still available. Fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate at the best of times. Most Liberty tanks are 60L, though some later were 64L. Owner's manual will tell you. The low fuel light will also trigger at different levels remaining. In my Impreza for example it is supposed to come on when there are 9L left (15%), yet I can fill up and get only 45L (75%) in when it first lights up on occasion. It is designed so whenever it reaches that level the light stays on. If the fuel is sloshing around it is easy to see how it thinks there is only 9L left, but there can be substantially more. Probably the best way to gauge what you have left is to always fill the tank, reset the trip-meter and know how the way you've been driving it effects consumption. I know with my Liberty that on an average driving sort of tank I NEED to get fuel just over the 500km mark. If I have driven pretty grandma-like I can get to just under 600km before I will run dry. If I have flogged the car I have run out with under 450km on the tank. This all comes from experience. I have run dry more times than I care to remember also, but almost always knew I had to get to a servo fast!liberty99GX wrote: yes, same here: from filling up till the fuel nozzle clicks off and filling up again when the reserve light's coming on I get a maximum of around 40 L into my '99 Liberty wagon, auto. And the manual says it's got a 64L tank. I haven't driven it dry yet, but it's bothering me a bit having to fill up all the time. Where do the missing 25 L go (after all, it's more than a third of the nominal tank volume)...

One of these days I'm going to have to test out exactly how far I can go, and how much fuel I can fit in the tank. I always thought it was 55L, and I usually drive for a day or so with the light on, but the workshop manual says it's 64L.
After the baby is born I'll go around with a jerry can for a week or so untill I splutter to a stop. Can't do it before hand, I'll be in trouble if it runs out on the way to the hospital! :P
*edit*
Wow... that's alot of entries! Nearly six years worth! My spreadsheet has six whole entries! Though the car was off the road for a while, so there's a bit of a hole there.

I set a new record on my recent trip down to the sunny coast in my slightly (read heavily modified) Brumby. I averaged 8L / 100km the whole way from townsville to the sunny coast! i was not hunging around sitting on the speedlimit with a light to medium load.
My ute still has a modified EA81 (Dual ports, cam, unifiter, snorkel and 2" exhaust)

L Series 3sp auto RX (GLTA) EA82 Turbo has just got me home at 537 pretty true kilometers (if not precise - highway and puttering and blat, blat turbo demo's
)). AT 530 it gave a hiccup on a downward slope and in the drive the fuel pump has gone noisy so I'd say I am close to getting 11litres for 100km out of my 60 litre tank. If it was all flat - how much further I dunno. All for getting empty to remove to install LPG cylinder in boot - tank is in the way of drill bit and bolts !

Ah, but how do you know how much you've used unless you fill it to the brim again!steptoe wrote:L Series 3sp auto RX (GLTA) EA82 Turbo has just got me home at 537 pretty true kilometers (if not precise - highway and puttering and blat, blat turbo demo's)). I glad you asked (in a Curisoty Show kind of way, or was that Julius Sumner-Miller?) I have precisely 20 litres in a jerry (in the boot for last days) - that went in without a drop spilled then off to the servo for another 35.6 litres , a little past the click on gentle speed - not want to drown charcoal cannister ! So 55.6 litres ! If you wanna get the last 4.5 litres DRIVE UP HILL coz it sucks from the back end of the tank i think. 540 km eh, to do the same in me LPG Brumby is about 70 litres at 57.9 V's 145.9. Now the 57.9 just gone to 72.9 !!!

Just ran out of fuel on purpose in my 92 Brumby with the rebored 1.0mm, totally rebuilt, 20/60 cammed EA81, heads shaved twice now! The previous owner, my uncle reckoned he'd run out at 500km on the old donk [serving time in my 84 ute] I later find timing set at about 2 degrees BTDC. With highway running in procedures in place - foot flat to the floor up hills but not over revving it, some town travel and some 4WD pace.
I have checked speedo accuracy with GPS and odometer on highway check posts all very close readings.
I got 609km out of the tank. I have no intention to refill it as I have finished my ring bed-in driving on petrol so will chuck the LPG manifold and mixer (gas carb) on in next few days
Previous measures I was getting 8.75 to 9.0 litres per 100km. It is a std Brumby tank. Just how big is it? I reckon 60 litres . There are some Brumby owners gonna be wondering. I knew that my 84 Brumby would last me to 600km with twin carbs and 16/56 cam
