What gearbox will fit
Two questions here:
I have a 1992 Liberty wagon. I would like to know what gearboxes other than what came with it will fit in it without changing the tailshaft.
Secondly, I want to know which will fit if I do change the tailshaft . mounts / shifter/ to suit.
Please only if you have first-hand knowledge
Just for interest's sake of course...

If you throw an auto in there you will need a shorter front shaft.
Other than that any 5 speed but if you go a turbo box you will have to change flywheel and clutch and use an hydraulic release. Doable but any NA 5 speed will go in there easier just make sure its the correct ratio.

Thats the low range ratio you find in L series boxes, you can't get it in an EJ based gearbox....unless;
- It's an older Liberty dual range gearbox and you have it custom modified to put an L series low range gear in place of the original one
- It's a later model dual range gearbox which has had a custom new low range gear installed (I think these cost about $1500 from a place in SA??)

Mounts are the same.SUBYDAZZ wrote:At this stage I'm looking to get one of the boxes with the 1.5:1 Lo range, whatever they actually came in, Forester maybe...
So what we are saying is all manual boxes from the Lib, Impreza, Forester and Outback are the same length? How about mounts?
I am not sure - correct me wrong I think the only low 1.5:1 range would be found in EJ16 & EJ18 Imprezas... Its a rumor that I heard a while ago and I haven't been able to get solid information. Apart from that would be getting these ratios from L series in Liberty's box.

I've got a late model (2004) 1.5:1 box, only requires easy mods. See showthread.php?t=7748
