Confirmed that the knock sensor shield earth and signal wire are pin 10 and 14in my body looms white plug . The engine side loom not surprisingly has the corresponding plug holes - plugged , meaning no knock sensor wires and connector .

Friends suggestion was to exchange 3 plug loom for complete 4 plug loom , does the complete loom plug into everything inside the car exactly the same way ?

Cheers A .

Do you mean does it plug into things like the wipers/light stalk/ignition barrel/radio ect.

Im not sure, but i have a feeling there may be a few different plugs, somebody else had the opposite problem when putting a 3 plug system into a 4 plug wagon, i think

I thought that may be the case . Its not unusual for a loom to have its fuse panel hard wired and thats the real sea of multi coloured spaghetti because virtually everything in the car leads back to that panel .

I think the next step is to tag the ECU end of the 4 plug loom and start snipping it free of the fuse panel wiring so I can work out the links to my cars original system - Ign and FP relays , ECU power and 101 control earths (BR)'s which seem to all meet in the loom .

To keep the added loom neat I think I'll retain the injector wiring because it feeds neatly to the resistor and engine loom plugs .
I admit I'm a wuss , I need to keep the 3P system "workable" because if the retro fitted 4P system doesn't work straight up the car's useless to me .
Once it works properly it can be neatened up later but either system has be operable initially .

As for the engine loom there is another question . I do have the Aus spec Spider/Turbo Vortex loom and it naturally fits its manifold but Vortex's have their plugs facing the firewall so it'll need to be extended to reach the L's body loom connections .

Ok now all the power supply and fuse panel wiring has been detached from the mostly engine control wiring - basically everything between the ECU plugs and all engine devices - and including the Ign and FP relays .

Out of time and working tonight but will be tagging everything when I have more time .

PS we want to replace the clip type injector and cold start air valve connectors with the Bosch GM type ones , no tools needed to disconnect these ones .

I got around to bringing home the Spider Vortex looms this afternoon and let me tell ya Paul sent most of that cars wiring ...

I have the long section from the ecu plugs (ecu lives under the rear parcel shelf in a Vortex) to the body harness connectors and what looks like the main section behind the dash . There is a long section a flimsy plastic strip thing that has the flat diff lock switch and a few other things as well .
I'd like to know precisely where this section plugs into the main loom and exits at the white solenoid connector . I think I'll cut out a square section in the console and use this switch rather than an L series one .

You wouldn't read about it , the engine to body harness connectors are the round and square 87 type . I prefer the round pair 88-89 type so I think I'll make a Spider engine loom based on an L series type and extend where necessary . The only real difference is the Spider TPS plug .

I spent a couple of hours last night tagging the 4 Ecu plugs wires to make life easier . A couple of wire colours were different to the 87 and 88/89 manuals but that's no dramas as long as you know what they do .

When removing the power/fuse box section from engine control loom I must have removed the diagnostic plug from the 12 wire ECU connector which corresponds to Ecu pins 37-48 . Pins 44-47 are check connections and trouble code output , must find that plug and refit it or one like it .

If anyone can identify this plug is it the 8 wire line end connector - shown on P35 of the 87 manual ?

Cheers A .
