Autos

Post by Bratgeebah » Wed Mar 26, 2008 6:06 pm

Whats the lowdown on gen1 2.2 auto boxs'?
Thinking about taking one soft roading eg a bit of beach and a bit of bush tracks/creeks etc with a light camper trailer and a car full of family.
I have a rear lsd for it. Are they any good for this? I could convert to manual (Lseries full time) later but would like to put that off. I also have front/rear 4.4 diffs to put in the auto and the rear end if I buy the car.
Cheers
Gee

Hi G, long time no see.
Thought this might interest you.
Apparantly someone I know has managed to fit a suretrack lsd into an auto front diff. It's a bit of work but is the only limo option.

They'll do the soft roading no problems. If you want to play with the way things lock up then vincentvega can fill you in on the way it all works and what wires to play with. They don't like working hard though. The front/rear distribution isn't as good as the VTD and will play up/burn out if you give them a hard time.

Thanks for the info.
Robin at perfourmance in Brissy. set up some sort of LSD for an auto too.
I had a look at it at his workshop when I was in Brissy for the BBQ a couple of years ago. I'm not sure what it was though.
Anyway I didn't buy the auto. I made him an offer and I'm waiting to see if he'll go for it. Looking at a manual one tomorrow.

Are sure track and torsen the same design?

Robin built the one I mentioned. It's a small world. Apparantly the few customers who have them fitted, like them.

Suretrac and Torsen (or Helical) are very different designs. Best to ask discopotato about the pros and cons. He seems to have tried them all.
